If you really want to understand the MPC 4K study its Z8 sampling engine http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jul02/a ... akaiz8.asp Also download the Z8 manual at www.akaipro.com. Far simpler and more in-depth than the MPC 4K`s. :D

Thanks misterv for the help:D

The article and the manual is much more informative about the sample engine and the functions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

After going through this Z8 manual so far and listening to some oldies (future sampling sources) I have concluded so far, I haven`t finished the Z8 manual, that every MPC 4K owner definitely needs to review it to better understand the MPC 4K sampler. It is extremely informative compare to the 4k and they`re both the same Z8 engine albeit without auto sampling and 2 less Qlinks. :D I`m ordering a hard copy manual to review on the train traveling back and forth. The MPC 4K is truely a all in one machine. From my understanding as of now when I had the 2KXL if I had gotten a Z8 to compliement it both would be a MPC 4K without the CDR, lessor resolution 960 to 96 ppq, bigger screen and CDR. but all the components were combine in the 4K. I have to admit my biggest difficulty adjusting from the 2XL to the 4K was my 2XL phrase sampling mentality and lack of experience using full keyboard sampler. Most users i assume were mainly using drum programs, and a limited sampler before coming to the 4K. Without experience working with S950s, S3000, S5000-S6K samplers, the mulits, keygroups, and effects before it was a tall order to learn jumping from a mainly a drum sampler and sequencer. The more you learn the easier it gets. The Z8 engine is the key is creating new sounds, playing realistic sounds, and giving your sessions that professional touch. For those familiar with the previous MPCs 60, 3K, 2K, 2KXL and 1K the 4K is definitely more than an expensive drum machine. It one of most powerful full hardware samplers on the market. Truely learn the sampler functions. And for those who have experience working with full samplers like the S950 to S6000will have a easier time with the Z8 engine. After that sequence the hell out of it. I guess Akai didn`t prepare the MPC customers for a full sampler with proper info. It was adveristize as a Z8 but how many members on this board were using a separate harware sampler or really paying attention to this fact. I like others were using synths workstations and drum samplers. For the S5000 and S6000 crowd which doesn`t have a board here the 4K was a godsend with the incredible sequencer and pads included. Enough raving 96Khz is great for keys, and realistic pianos. Once again the 4K is a true full fledged sampler connect it to a midi keyboard and play away. If you are very creative you don`t need a extra synth Nord, Triton (I got rid of mine maybe keep a Yamaha), Roland many people only use the presets combins and programs anyway. A sampler is a synth which you can create your own sounds and if I want that nice yamaha patch I can get the multsample sounds on CD load them in 4Ks Z8 and play it at the fraction of the cost and space in my studio. Software samplers can do the same but I like hardware controllers more than a mouse without worry of crashing. I`m off back to the manual and then to the lab. I hope some of the newbies, vets and studio heads pick up on this. It`s not the machines that **** up it the user not knowing what the **** he or she is doing. The best technique is to learn what you don`t know. I had to get my mind right, get yours right and always, always, do you.

Do you ***** :D

You don't have to download the manual if you have the akSys CD rom. the manuals for the Z samplers, the MPC 4000 and DPS 24 and akSys are on there.

Just to keep this going I got the hard copy from Akai loving it. Working with keygroups and sample editing loops so that I can create unique programs aka intruments. Like I said before get the Z8 manual to understand the 4K. :D

Hi.. i've been reading through the Z8 manual. Does anybody know if the MPC-4000 has
Auto Sampling? I can't quite seem to find where it's at. Not in the Record screen. Tried
every field and hit the "window" key but can't seem to find it. Thx!

Threshold on the record menu. When you select threshold, recording automatically begins when when there is an input signal. I think that is what you are referring to.

I think he`s referring to the function which lets you record off sampling CDs where according to the Z8 manual using auto sampling it will record the note or loop stop assign it to a key and automatically record and assign the next note or loop on the CD in sequential order until the process is finished. This is supposely supported in Z8 as a record and forget function. I haven`t found it either in 4K. It may be a future update. Unless Sean W of Akai knows?

I think on the mpc 4000 if you name a sample snare. The next sample will be named snare 1, snare 2, snare 3 and so fourth.

Blue Haze, i think your right. I haven't actually read the Z8 manual yet.

Akai should make a decent manual for us, 4k headz!
What a [bleep] is this! Im not going to collect thousands of manuals just cause of Akai makes us shitty manuals..
Everything should be in one book (or pdf), jeeeeezzz..
I do not train a lot, blue haze. And if, I m not carrying a major backpack to put all them manuals in ;)
... just my opinion ... :?

To each his own ikke. For me I wanted to learn what I didn`t know in order to get full usage of my sampler functions so I put two and two together and bam it makes sense the 4K has a Z8 and the Z8 came out before the 4K. I agree that akai should have included a more comprehensive manual in the first place. But in this life I learned one could either sit and **** or get off my ass and do for self. Akai didn`t included all this infomation but by trail and error I`m learning more and figuring out. Akai really assumes too much that most users are very familiar with these instruments. Most are first and second time buyers like myself haven`t ever worked with an engineer or in a professional studio. But I won`t let that stop my development and goals. I bought this machine for a reason to make great music. I ride to work everyday on the train which is now a good 50 min ride each way (I moved near the beach). So I use that time on the train like my man Tony Maserati (famous mixer and engineer of Mariah, Mary, Faith, Kelly, Maxwell and others) his mixes are tight does everyday to learn something new to read the manual. I use common sense and bring only one. Most people ride the train with a newspaper, comic, or some shit listening to a walkman I choose to educate myself. No other buster, lame or dickhead is going to help you not even Akai. So my philosophy is to get my mind right and do me. _Do you, are just give up and moan you if you don`t have the information, you won`t know. Find out what you don`t know. I picked up MPC tutor`s ebook and that has shit in there that helps too. Go for self. Or forever b*i*t*c*h and moan. I for one ain`t my mofo kin crab in a bucket and I ain`t no miser either I shared what I learned. Do you fellow MPC user.

P.S. the auto sampling records and stops repeatly on the S6000 and Z8 so you can multisample an entire sample CD across the keyboard while you watch TV, have lunch, or take a dump. You don`t even have to be in the same room. So far the 4K might not have this function installed is what in the Z8 manual. The parameter auto recording would show under the threshold window. For the others heed the tip or forget it. It`s all up to you follow the crowd or learn the shit yourself. Ikke talk to sean or write Akai about your legitmate compliants but don`t sweat I Blue the muthakin Haze baby :D
