Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By keer Sat Mar 21, 2009 7:24 pm
Hi MikeMix

I bought the same card reader like yours (picture at the page 5). Everything works but it isn't "Hot-Swap"!!
I don't know if it's OS 1.72 fault or if it's problem with card reader...

Do Yo have the same problem with mpc2000??

P.S. I use the Acard AEC-7720U SCSI-to-IDE Bridge.

Cheers

Everything works fine.

That DR4 knob is dope!!!! I will try the knob of my old VCR right now :)

peace

edit: doen't fit. The Ring is to big and th hole of the inner knob is smaller than the Akai one :(

Do you have a DR4 or did you buy the knob somewhere?
buying a DR4 just to get a black knob is .......not very intelligent ;)
The whole DR recorder series had that jogwheel. Also the remote DL4

But I guess there are some VCR Jogwheels that could fit too. I regret throwing away most of my knobs that I collected all the years from old electronics :(

Oh and the pic of your 2000 is very nice. You know how to set your camera. What camera did you use for the pic??

peace

I've got the DR4 and DR16.

Money is not a big deal, payed € 75,- ( $ 95,-) for the DR4 in good working condition with latest OS and midi-board.

The picture is made with a Nikon D3, It's my profession

i have given up my hopes to find internal scsi card reader :P but scsi zip drive would suffice those are sometimes in ebay sales.. but i found this too from ebay

http://cgi.ebay.de/SCSI-to-IDE-Bridge-C ... 7C294%3A50

but would that fit inside and work in mpc looks a little bit too big. found one german seller from internet to that ACARD scsi / ide adapter but 88 euros for that WHOA quite expensive for that :D

also has anyone tryed that smtp port thingy i mean that slot 25pin to internal 50 scsi bracket where you will lose the external 25 connector tho.

OK, i am definitely going to do this.

I will succeed.

i have to learn some more about this though, because that printout explaining what wires go to what pins is confusing to me, i dont understand it.

I like the idea to enable to connect internal SCSI device i.e. IDE CF reader with SCSI to IDE converter, but soldering the 50 pin SCSI ribbon cable directory to the mainboard is just too time consuming and too easy to make mistake, since it has to be converted to 25 pin to 50 pin.
I don't like the idea of use the SCSI port outside neither, it would look kind of awkward.

I ordered solderless CF card reader kit from DJ Johnny Jams. (Check the thread (http://www.mpc-forums.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=125262), the kits have been sold out.)

When I saw this 25 pin to 50 pin SCSI converter;

I realized that I can solder between the MPC-2000 mainboard's SCSI port (25-pin) to the SCSI converter's PCB board (also 25-pin).
This is much easier than soldering 50-pin SCSI ribbon connector to the mainboard (thus eliminating necessity to convert 25-pin to 50-pin ribbon cable.) With this scheme, the ribbon cable would be connected to the SCSI converter, inside the MPC.

I haven't done it yet, but this is much easier than soldering 50-pin SCSI ribbon cable.

This is the SCSI converter, to be placed inside MPC-2000 classic

This is my plan:

Probably I have to relocate the green wire (ground wire from line voltage), but it should not be too hard, well, making a hole on the bottom plate might be tough, as it is a thick metal plate.

We sell an easy-to-install SCSI drive install kit for the MPC2000 Classic that gives you an internal SCSI
IDC50 connector. You can use it to install our CF-CARD SCSI Card reader drive (see my sig below).
It is a very easy install that takes about 30 minutes and does not require you to modify your MPC at all.

Our CF-CARD SCSI card reader drive allows you to use compact flash cards up to 8GB in size, so
hot-swapping isn't an issue. 8GB is a lot of space and this card reader drive
is very fast and super reliable.

Here is a link to the install kit:

http://scsiforsamplers.com/installkits.asp

Here is a link to the CF-CARD drive:

http://scsiforsamplers.com/cfcard.asp

Everyone who has this drive loves it! Call or email us and get your MPC2000
Classic set up with a card reader the fast, easy way! We ship worldwide and
accept Paypal.

Your SCSI drive install kit looks great, but I want to see an external SCSI cable routed to SCSI device inside. Since I am comfortable with soldering and I modding, and my installation plan is much easier than the idea mentioned by Destruktiv. I know am taking the harder route.

So I just bought the supplies for this mod. It ended up costing me a little over $70 (including shipping and a usb cf reader). I feel that's pretty cheap. I went the SCSI --> IDE converter route, so hopefully that works. The converter I found is SUPER cheap, but according to the guy they work fine. I will let you guys know if it works or not. Here's the links:

SCSI to IDE adapter ($37):
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 434wt_1167

CF Reader ($1):
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... K:MEWNX:IT

Hopefully this works. One question about power: I noticed both the adapter and the IDE drive have power inlets. Do both need to be powered for this mod to work or just the drive? Where would I suck this power from if both need it (I'm assuming the main board).

You don't have to worry about overloading power supply. I bought the similar parts from MPC Forum member and I added extra molex connectors, (which I salvaged from a old PC power supply) for scsi to ide adapter and CF reader. They do not draw a lot of power. I think a floppy disk drive requires much more wattage.
I have not finished (or started?) my project yet (see my posts above.) (I have two small kids and don't have time on weekends like I used to...) But, I did confirm that the scsi adapter and IDE CF reader combo work on MPC-2000 classic. It boots from CF reader.
I am working on putting everything in the MPC-2000 classic unit.

So I finished the mod this morning! Everything works but my screen is really dim now... I'm almost positive it's a power problem (don't think the screen has anything wrong with it), but I'm not sure if it's because the card reader and adapter are sucking too much power or if i messed something up while screwing around inside my machine... Help?
