Why not more than 26 seconds for the 60

Hey there,
Does anyone know why one cannot expand the memory of the mpc 60 to more than 26 seconds?

I don't know. My guess is that it's either not possible through hardware reasons and/or not possible beacuse of the way the operating system has been programmed. If it was done more or less easily I think we would have seen these kind of expansions already..

It would take a software rewrite to address the additional banks of memory and it would take a different kind of expansion board to house all the memory. I think the original concept around the MPC 60 was a more flexible drum machine that would load and store samples on floppy discs hence the 26.2 second limitation...

One of the selling features of the later MPCs was how much more RAM they had -- up to 32MB for the MPC 3000 and MPC 2000/XL... why sell an upgrade kit for $150 - $500 when they could sell a new MPC 3000 for $3000?

if you want more sampling time, add another sampler.

yeah i really like the thing with keygroups this givs a very unique sound and feeling. which sampler do you recommend me?

no it is not possible. the CPU cant allocate to higher then that... the 60 doesnt support double sided ram... it just cant address it.

if you replace the motherboard, CPU, and all that then sure... but it wont be a 60 anymore.

they sampled in mono, they recorded 33s at 45 and pitched it down to save memory... 20 seconds is a lot when it comes to making beats.... but dont expect to record an entire vocal set on the machine.
