I didn't want to say I was planning on getting the focusrite saffire pro 40, because I was afraid that might be a mistake and would get flamed by the super cool elitist's here. I see the Motu is the same price. What would be better?

It's ok, just do your research. This should be a long term purchase. If you can spend the money go for a good firewire interface. Also check RME 800 or TC electronic konnekt 48(my PERSONAL favorite). those are more expensive but quality interfaces.

Which monitors do you have?

Firewire interfaces are typically considered the way to go.

If you're using a PC, make sure that you use a Texas Instruments firewire card as your interface though, as a lot of the 'cheap' firewire cards will cause you nothing but nightmares. TI has been the only consistent way to go for me.

And honestly... even though not all audio interfaces are created equal, for any given price range they will generally be comparable and have there pro's/con's over other gear. I'd be less worried about the brand snobbery that you get and just make sure that you get something that has the feature set you want/need. Also if you shop around a good 'feature' to look for especially for this kind of investment is a good return policy. Then you can get two interfaces, do a side by side yourself and return the one that you don't want.

Peace
