mpc1000 + no stereo (can't panning) -stereo out explanation?

Hiya!

I have problem with stereo out in mpc1000-hooked with 2x1/4 mono to 2x1/4 mono cable to focusrite saffire line in--do I have to have a 2x1/4 stereo cable? I've seen some tutorials on Youtube and people seem to use same cables ?I can't get a stereo signal in my headphones hooked to focusrite ---how can I get a stereo signal thru spdif btw ?maybe this way will work--many thanks for any suggestions--

When I plug cable into line in of my focusrite from my mpc 1000 stereo out-I can hear only mono signal(despite some of samples have been panned)-when I unplug this cable and listen to the song on mpc itself (thru headphones)everything is in stereo....... :/

ok. what exactly does the cable look like? Post am image because I have a feeling you may be using an incorrect cable.

no.

you need a 1/4" mono cable for the L channel and a 1/4" mono cable for the R channel

so a 2 x 1/4" mono should be ok

do you hear an actual mono signal in the focusrite, as in the sum of the L+R channels, or do you only hear one channel, either L or R?

what if you swap the plugs on the MPC over? (don't touch the ends plugged into the focusrite, just swap the ends plugged into the MPC). do you hear the opposite channel in headphones plugged into the focusrite, or the same as before?

Cheers for all replies--- I can hear the sum of right and left (swapping jacks in mpc doesn't help)

-focusrite saffire has got line-in 1 and line-in 2 (2 line -ins )plugs for only one 1/4 jack-so maybe I need one 1/4 stereo to 2x1/4 mono jacks??

bingo - I think that's it

if the focusrite has two stereo inputs, then you don't want to send a mono signal to each, you want both mono signals going to one input

If you put a TS (mono) jack in a TRS (stereo) socket then the Ring and Sleeve connectors will both make contact with the Sleeve, so the L input and R input both get the same signal.

alternatively, you could pan the LineIn1 signal hard left and pan the LineIn2 signal hard right, but that wastes an input, if the inputs are stereo you might as well use a 2xmono to 1xstereo lead

that should work fine. That is why I wanted to actually see the cables you are using because its possible you have the wrong ones.

So then the signals should be panned within the DAW? Otherwise there's nothing that says LineIn1 is L and LineIn2 is R, right?

Yea I think by default the DAW may put them in the center. SPDIF should be panned no problem. But again, if he has the wrong wiring none of that will matter lol.

I have tried to use line1 and line2 as a different channels (left and right )connecting this 2x1/4 cable to each of them (the other 2x1/4 I plugged in mpc outputs)but it's still mono signal -so maybe this 1stereo(line in of focusrite) 2xmono (stereo MPC out)cable could sort it out...I have that cable but very short-I used it in that way but the signal was weak and mono sound in the mix (especially kicks)nearly dissapeared-(sounded like cracks)....weird (similar to vocal cut or something-highs and mids were much more noticebly +lack of bass and everything in mono)....I will be trying tommorow to find solution

is it too much trouble for you to check your focusrite manual?

A stereo link button is included at the bottom of analogue input 1 for
linking the two analogue inputs if a stereo signal is being recorded.
Clicking the button activates stereo linking mode, which disables the
analogue Input 2 controls, as both are now controlled by analogue
input 1, and replaces all the controls in the Input balance section of the
outputs settings section with one dial to mix between inputs 1/2 and
3/4 (see PROCESSING/MIXING OF STEREO OUTPUTS section on
page 13 for more info).

so the inputs are mono, and there's a button you can use to say "I'm connecting a stereo pair to the two inputs"

That's because you're cancelling your 'center' channel.

You need to pan Line1 hard left and Line2 hard right in your DAW, this should fix your problem. You may also need to adjust your phase 180 degrees on one of your channels, but may not be a requirement.

Thanks for all replies-I've managed to sort it out--I activated this stereo link button and used both line1 and line2 inputs as stereo(line 1 as L and line2 as R)---I missed it in manuals of my focusrite

...anyway i have problems with my firewire input in my laptop(losing connection between my focusrite and laptop)all the time)vista is a crap--but it's another problem and another story

You probably don't have a higher end firewire chip in your laptop. You might want to check though and see, there may be driver fixes for the firewire that could make your system behave better as well. Worth a look and a google search to see what comes up though.
