make sound fat

here is what i do... but its very time consuming and works good on breaks...

i have a break on my PC, i record it on Tape, then from tape i pass it thru my sh-z200 (eq) straight into the MPC.

sounds like you should inititally sample your sounds into the s950, then sample the outs of the s950 into your computer or mpc to capture that s950 sound. then tweak it on your computer to fatten up and load in the mpc.
like this:

sample source > s950 > record to computer > tweak in DAW > load in mpc

or

sample source > s950 to crunch > mpc to trim/chop > save as wav in mpc > make beats > record to daw > do any neccesary eqing,compression when final beat is tracked

I had this discussion before, and beach_break is right. Sequence the 950 with your 500. I don't get how people sample into these classic machines, only to sample it again once or twice with other gear. Your loosing alot of "that sound" you want. You don't like waiting 10-15 sec for floppy's, then why did you get a 950? You may be better off just EQin stuff in your computer.

i agree, but dude is persistant on not using floppies, so if floppies are out, there is not another choice but to resample or not use it at all.

yes, I understand that leaving samples in the 950 is the best solution, but I prefer so much to use samples in the mpc, just for reasons like the available memory space, the workflow, not just for floppies, you know, I think is the best way for me.

anyway, I try to get the 950 sound with operations like:
- apply the 950 low pass filter
- play the sample sampled at 45 at a lower note that reproduce the original sound
and then re-sample my sample in the computer, do the chop, and then put samples in the mpc; I think it's cool, especially for drums, chopping samples in the computer, yes, I know that the traditional way is using only ears, but it's so much easier and faster, and for me it produces better results

I think that if I have the mpc 1000 or 2500, looking at the waveform on the display, I'd prefer to chop in the machine, but with the 500 is so boring...

and so my method now is: turntable ---> 950 (tuning, filtering) ---> computer (chopping and eventually eqing and compressing) ---> mpc (making the beat) ---> daw (mixing)

a question without answer for now is: eqing / compressing the sample before make the beat, or eqing / compressing separate tracks after the tracking in the daw?

now I use both, so I try to make the sample sound in the best way when I record it from the 950 in the computer, and also appling effects in the mixing... anybody does that way also?

a question off topic: when in the mpc I use the 12-level function with tune parameter, I have my sample on 12 different notes, but it seems like my midi keyboard midi with the mpc doesn't recognize that... in other words, I can't play with keyboard my sample on those 12 different notes, is it normal?

I EQ everything before it goes into a sampler.

No, the signalflow in that case will be LineIn -> LineIn Amp -> Monitor potentiometer -> mixout

These doesn't work AFAIK. I remember someone here or over at the SP1200 forum tested this (probably not exactly this emulator but a similar) without success.

I think EQ experience is all you need. Also keep an eye on sampling level. You can get some nice distortion out of the 950 if the reclevel is hot.
