MPC5000 reviews, bug reports and fellow user support on the most recent standalone, hardware MPC from Akai

I'm new to the boards but have been producing since the late 90's, nothing Major Label wise just good old underground and some small label work. I have owned my own studio and had a great time doing music. I'm not trying to hype myself up as anything more than I am, just make music and have spent some time with those who like to do the same.

So, I feel I have enough experience and know how to trouble shoot or find the answer for this but I'm stuck. I see quite a bit of good advice and expertise here in the forum and would like a second or third opinion. I recently sold my XL, Classic, 1000 and 2500 to make some software upgrades and pick up the 5000 and the MPK 88. I use Mac Pro Quad-Core Intel 2.66, 10BG RAM, PT 8.0.4, LIVE 8.2.1, CUBASE 4, YAMAHA HS80's, Apogee Rosetta 200, Avalon 737 VTsp with M-Audio ProFire 2626.

Gear wise, I'm good and I love my setup. I tried numerous times to slave the MPC 5000 as before in the same fashion as the 2500 and 1000. MODE, MIDI, SYNC, MIDI CLOCK; set Live as Master send and recieve.. PT 8 - same sent MIDI BEAT Clock.. nothing

checked my cables, switched my cables.. unplugged the MPK 88 so the USB wouldn't interfeere.. nothing... sent MIDI out of MPK to MPC IN.. nothing.. MPC 5000 shows (EXT) Sync, but still nothing..

I took it back because after ALL that I still couldn't even trigger the Keys and Synths in the 5000 with the MPK88 and thats a big reason I copped it.... So, did I miss something or is the 5000 troubled??

It seems so simple, but I could never get it to work either :?

(Got it to work by using the power cord from my apc, mpk only came with usb...)

I never did like syncing via midi clock on a daw. You' ll encounter sync drift. If you must use a daw to sequence you will probably get better results using it as a sound module via midi. When you use the MPK try int instead of ext. Maybe your midi cable is faulty? Good luck... Did you already take the 5000 back? Ouch.

for Ableton : did you check the 'sync' box for the MIDI Out you are using in Live's preferences ?
I guess you want to use MPK's Midi Out to transfer sync to MPC, so you'll have to enable this in Live's preferences (I believe 'by default' sync is off)
Basically that's all you have to do from that side...as far as slaving MPC (or ssalving Ableton to MPC) I never had any problem.

Well, I appreciate all the input and advice and maybe I jumped the gun but I bought it used so I felt good a bout the return.

I didn't get to try any of the advice you guys posted but I am now deliberating on either a new 5000 or a used 4000... I have sort of considered the Mashine briefly but I have too much of a MPC brain to go there.. i like the hardware just enough to keep one around.. Now i'm MPC-less until I decide... ehh, well on to ebay
