Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

This was posted from another thread. I think it's extremely relevant to the topic in this thread:

SMC wrote:Yes the LCD screen IS so proprietary that a substitute cannot be found.

The problem is a discontinued IC chip (An 8 Bit Microprocessor made specifically for display control)
It is no longer manufactured.
And judging by the info I've found it was made for either Only this screen, or a small number oif products.
In such cases, small quantities of the components (The IC) are made according to orders placed by manufacturers,
These manufacturers order enough components (and some extra) for what they intend to build.
So it is most likely that AKAI's OEM Screen manufacturer (Nobody knows who it was) ordered just enough for each run,
as well as anyone else using this IC,
and the IC Manufacturer (Fujitsu) made enough per order.

So, the point is, the IC's are discontinued. You can't make this screen without them.
Nobody is gonna fire up and manufacture the IC cause it wouldn't be worth it.
Fujitsu expressed no interest in reproducing the chip.
Nor did they seem intrested in releasing any technical info, even when offered money for it.
(I do however have a datasheet, and schematic of the IC, but that's not gonna help)

So far, NO, it can not be reproduced.
I even tried searching and sourcing the globe for a stockpile of the IC's. No Luck.

I have gotten mixed results with other LCD's using similar components, but nothing good enough to settle for.
If I get something even remotely close I'm going to call it good and run with it - making it available.
But for now.... no such luck

Fujitsu is not the manufacturer of the chip which is likely the reason they were tight lipped about releasing information - it's not their IP. I truly question the veracity of "almost getting it to work". There just ain't no such thing. The original is such a strange command set that there is nothing like it on the market today (and nothing else at the time, either). You wouldn't even get the display to initialize.

I have full datasheets and have been talking to the original MPC display from an IDE. I'm not taking pictures of the research setup - it's all proprietary information to Envision Electronics Design, at the moment. I can't even reveal how I determined with 100% accuracy who the manufacturer is. When I do, you'll slap your forehead in disbelief. ;)

When I have prototypes, I will take comparison shots. We're talking a matter of a few weeks. :)

If you've got a drop-in LCD that fits the chassis of the 2k AND the 2kxl, I want to talk with you. You have a PM.

E-MU doesn't make their displays...

I meant that my man SMC will not believe how it was done... Needless to say, I won't be telling for at least a couple years. However, the company is still alive and well. And, it was NOT a custom chip for Akai. :)

Ok, we found a stock sized display which means we won't have to tool up a new one = less cost to the end user. The only catch is that it's a single color (white) backlight. If I go with this, I can have a bezel made that will accept color films (known as gels) between the backlight and the LCD display.

Color film Pros:
Cheaper
You can put a multicolor gel into the display to highlight different portions of the screen at the same time.
Get to market faster

Color Film Cons:
Can only set up when the display is out of the chassis.
Not quite as cool
Some colors, like deep blue, will be harder to see

What are your thoughts on this? Wait for the RGB backlight or get the white one and use color gels?

I will buy one if they work. My screen is 100% right now too. And I would still buy one.

BUT

Colors? Nah. Just classic styles. I don't give a crap about colors and would think that any that do would be willing to throw down extra $ for that feature as an upgrade.

Keep it cheap enough and I'll order two.

Ok...

Envision... I know you were on this ish like 2 years ago or something too.... so keep game son! Keep it comin if yer on it.

I'm $5k in this right now, and due to some issues, a couple of my own, and a couple not my own, it'd be about another $5k

I'd rather pull the plug if you're gonna have some out in weeks. No point in me spending the money.

Wondering why you called me if you're ready to move on this????

Anyway... I have Fujitsu data sheets. :) In many cases, multiple manufacturers will make or brand the same piece. U should know this as an electrical engineer

Over my head? Ha :) Yeah... Close maybe..... with multilayer PCBs and crazy Micros/ICs and such.... but really, it's like a 64 channel console.... break it down in pieces and it's as simple as a channel at a time. as a loose way to put it....
I had made some discoveries and thought of some stuff that made it seem real practical at the time, and when everything went off for production, seemed gravy and like I had it.... I didn't expect the problems, at least not to this extent, and didn't expect the additional costs, half of which are my own fault. So yeah, it was a big undertaking, but nothing beyond my capabilities given time and patience.... Oooh, and money..... dang near everything is possible if you just throw some money at it.

Whatever... nothing to defend here. I'd put up pics, but pics give so much away I'd be handing off some info that cost me a lot of time and money to do.

I was also asked to put up pics of functioning 2000XL readers with more than 2GB cards working, alongside internal drives, and I never posted em, but people are still doing it with my setups :)

The studio biz is going real well actually... and so are 3 new musical projects, and some major label releases..... so as much as I luv this techy stuff, it can't be priority

I'll be watching this to see if envision moves, and if he does I'll just pull the plug and take my order of pointless flawed screens and call it a wash
If he hasn't moved, then I'll get back at it.

Life is crazy... single dad, full time, studio, 'bands', clients.... not enough time in a day :)

If you knew me personally, you wouldn't be on some smack :) Maybe get smacked! HAHAHAHAAAAA

Thanx Grubs... dude, you need to come peep the console now. Done. Automated. SIIIIIIIIICK!!!!!!!!

And u gotta come peep the new project stuff..... ill.... and I just finished a new solo joint that K Dweeb wants ;)

Sure, maybe **** made them for Fujitsu. But there's no denying that Fujitsu parts aren't what's on the MPC display. I'll tell you how I found the manufacturer's logo and name right after the displays are on the market. I don't need to wait two years.

I ain't on smack - I just didn't see results. No pics?

I started thinking about in in '09. Didn't know it was an issue before that.

I'll put pics in my main thread.

wow, so much lost in translation.....

I'm always clownin son. I never take anything too serious. hate negativity.... booo... didn't mean anything negative by that

people who know me know I do what I say. trust that. people thought I was nuts with a lot of stuff that I've done

my engineer thought I was on crack when I designed my console mod. and it's done now. :) took about 6 months longer than anticipated, but it's done. And it doesn't smoke when you turn it on.... anymore.... hahahahaaaa..... long story

All luv son all luv. I've got bigger fish to fry than to be internet thuggin
