Outboard gear requires a signal flow that makes sence its from source, running thru cables, thru an interface, thru cables, into a pre-amp, thru cables, into compressor, thru cables into interface, thru cables into destination, from destination ,thru cables, into interface, thru cables into monitors which are have built in compression in the speakers via the magnets and and ohm resistance.
Its not like you just get a compressor and it sounds great. You have to come correct or your wasting your time. Good luck.
Good man.. thats one of the things people with gear lust forget. The mere fact of putting this stuff in your signal chain isn't going to just automatically be a night and day difference (unless you were using crap to begin with). Someone else here said remember, its the man that must operate the units. With that said, I use SSL too and the Golden Audio Comp 54, modeled after the Neve 2254 and 33609. That units hot because its got a sort of bypass switch, where I can still run audio thru to get the comp's flavor, without actually compressing. I def love what it does to all drums, bass, vocals, and synthy stuff.
