Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

copied from the mpc3000 manual. i really like using this feature. again this is after the sample has been sampled.

• The <Best st> (best start) soft key: This function automatically finds the point within a sound at which the drum strike begins, bypassing any dead space at the beginning of the sound which could cause play delays. Pressing this soft key causes the following screen to appear:
It works by searching through the sound for the earliest sample that exceeds the threshold entered into the Start threshold field. To find the best start, enter a number into the field (5% is a good starting point) and press <Do it>. At that time, the Edit Sound screen reappears with the Soft st field set to the optimum starting value. Experiment with the threshold value. A value too low will start the sound too early, causing a slight playback delay; a value too high will start too far into the sound, cutting off too much of the beginning.

Not after sampling, no.

They just integrated it into the sampling process itself.

You set the threshold level BEFORE you sample, and once the threshold is reached, it will start sampling (plus a little pre-roll, if you want).

Does the 3000 not do this? Seems to be a fairly common sampling feature on almost every sampler I've used.

But no, you cannot do it after the fact in the 2kxl.

It's not the same.
The v3 60 and 3k have the Best St function as well as the threshold when sampling and they work totally different.
The Best St is part of the reason the upgraded 60 and 3k samples sequence the way they do.

Wow. Never knew that the 3000 (60 v3) had this function. Probably a reason for the tight timing people talk about when it comes to these machines.
The 950 also have a function called "auto start". Its kind of a zero crossing/transient search that helps finding a startpoint of a sample. I still do it manual most of the times tho (play back the sample 2 or 3 octaves lower and set the startpoint via digits)
