well, you dont have to... maybe you can rig something up to avoid drilling. it's not a hard drive that has moving parts so...

be creative. some people have hollowed out broken floppy drives and used those as an enclosure for loose CF adapters.


I guess I'm not entirely sure what you mean by loose... it does come with a 3.5' drive bay frame to screw it on to...

what i meant by loose is... not bolted down super tight... okay that is obviously the best option but not entirely necessary supposing you dont have a drill and what not. what I mean is... no damage would be done if you rigged something with electrical tape or what ever you come up with... because it is not a moving part... plus many people have rigged CF readers on the cheap in their XLs.

Yes, You'll have to make two holes on CF card reader in order to mount the drive.

Yeah, now that I opened up the MPC I see immediately why holes are needed. Should be an easy enough fix though.

Just checked out that linked thread, I see why the holes are needed... just not sure how to line them up that perfectly and get them drilled the right size that the screws will actually fit. Oh MPC, ah joos can't quit yoo.... =P

I can drill the holes for you and send you the modified bracket if you need it. I have lots of those same brackets and am used to drilling them for the MPC2000XL. It is tough because of the thick gauge metal used and I have to use a tool to thread the holes after drilling.

If you don't want to bother with that, go to a home supply store and buy the small roll of that Scotch/3M red double-sided tape. That stuff is strong as can be and believe me, it will hold your card reader in place.

What tool do you use for threading the holes? If I can buy that, I should be able to take care of it myself, I appreciate the offer though.

It is a small 4/40" tap tool that will create the threads. Mine has a small handle and you twist it in by hand but you can also buy one that attaches to a drill.

You drill the two holes in the proper position and then use the tap tool to create the threads.

I bought mine on ebay but I can not find another like it now - sorry.

So I got the holes drilled and everything and...

didn't realize you can't use a standard PC IDE cable.

Where the hell do I find the right kind of IDE cable to connect this thing?

I have a kit for that which contains the IDE cable and a power adapter (makes a floppy power plug into a Molex plug). You can use any regular IDE cable. The only caveat is that it cannot have the blocked pin on one end. The MPC IDE header requires all 40 pins be open and most of the IDE cables you'll find have the blocked pin on both ends.

it takes a bit of work... but you can cut that blocked pin entirely out with an exacto blade...
