I'm no expert on drum programming as there are a billion methods to freak a billion drum sounds. First off, the swing feature is one of the main reasons I invested in the MPC line. I like to put sounds right where I need them to be. What I find is that if you never mess with the swing feature, your beats may sound too electronic (the human feel is not there). Don't get me wrong, you can get by without it, but you probably won't after you figure out how to use this feature. Below is a little "wannabe" MPC-Tutor example of swing.
1-Bar (Kick/Snare) Loop with NO SWING @ 1/16 quantisation:
Kick Kick Snare Kick Kick Kick Snare Kick
..1.............2...........3.............4.........
1-Bar (Kick/Snare) Loop with only the Kick set to 63% SWING @ 1/16 quantisation:
Kick Kick Snare Ki-Kick Kick Snare Ki-
..1.............2...........3.............4.........
Bad example...I know. I would experiment applying swing individually to any percussion hit. I say "apply swing individually" because you don't necessarily want to apply swing to every instrument. I'll leave the snare alone and apply swing to the other stuff at times. But then again I try anything, so it's pretty much up to you to be risky and break barriers. Just trust your ears. I've applied swing to a chopped piano sample just so that it lands in the right place. That's the key thing for me. Placing your sound in the exact place you need it to make the song sound right. Hmmn, maybe that's why people go the computer sequencing route? But that's another forum topic. To all the headz that undastand this feature...add on...peace
