Minimizing Gain

I was wondering how some of you guys minimize gain on some of your samples...Also is there a certain way or technique to get the best quality from records. new rca cables? better mixer?

What do you mean exactly by 'minimising gain'?

the simple answer is turn it down

I think dude is refereing to background hums, hiss or noise.

so seems dude wants to improve the signal to noise ratio

but look at ur cables and earthing if ur turntable has that

yea do u mean ..... getting ur beat loud so u dont have to turn up the main volume on your mp as much?

alright well i checked my turntable for the ground wire and it doesnt have one so what would yall suggest?

Maybe try a different outlet to plug your TT into? Perhaps a power conditioner? I think I might invest in one of those myself.

Anyone else using a power conditioner?

besides grounding it run it thru 12band eq

i have this real old school radio/record/cassette player. its called a Yorx "audio compact stereo system" i havent played anything on it in a while and i discovered the other day that it produces some quality sound so i think i will use that to sample from, and im getting a better mixer with EQs on it (the one i have is so cheap it just has gain and volume knobs) so i think i'll be all set

when you say minimizing gains, do you mean adjusting peak points? Like, rescaling the gain of certain parts within a sample? Can be done in just any audio editing software, Wavelab for instance. You would just mark the region you want to edit, and simply add or reduce gain.

Use your ears and adjust accordingly. I'm sure the distortion is there before sampling.

Don't sample them so "hot". Unfortunately, MPC doesn't have a great level meter so just turn the gain down until you can achieve the best SNR - signal to noise ratio.

If you mean after you've sampled and tracking to your DAW / Tape etc, run throught the same settings this time with the output mixer.

So many factors here from disc condition to stylus to tone arm to weight to transmission isolation to preamp to... etc. Many threads here and elsewhere regarding this.
