step aside RME Fireface...8 channels of ADAT into the 4K?

Got your hopes up eh?

Just had a thought about running ADAT out of protools into the 4 k for extra channels for mixin out of the box.

Then started wondering if there was away of routing ADAT into the analogue outputs for a 8 channel ADAT DA conversion....Haven't put much research or thought into this...is this possible? My suspision is that you can only gain two channels (not 8) in the recording window.

Still that's two more channels to mix on, or you could run your effects card through Q-FX as an additional effects send from your DAW.


anyone care to take this idea further.

I just bought a UFX. I haven't yet but I plan on running my 4k 8ch adat to the UFX.
4k main outs hard left and hard right into UFX analog inputs.

2analog ch + 8optical adat ch from 4k = 10 outputs to UFX.

What I have currently is 4k optical adat into digi001 which works fine.

WHY would you do 4k da converter into an analog input? That defeats the purpose of digital unless
you don't have a adat/spdif digital input on your interface.

Also you said adat INTO the 4k?!? Can you please clarify.

Input source field

Selects one of the following sources for recording.

• ANALOG IN .............. The input signal from the rear panel REC IN [PHONO] jacks
or REC IN [LINE/MIC] jacks.

• DIGITAL IN ............... The input signal from the rear panel [DIGITAL IN] jack (only
if the IB-4D option is installed).

• MAIN OUT ................ The same signal as is output from the rear panel [MAIN
OUT] jacks.

• ADAT 1/2–7/8............. The input signal from the ADAT interface (only if the ADAT
option is installed).



4k manual, pg 155. I will fully check it out tomorrow. I have never even used the adat IN so this is yet another experiment, lol.

If it was 1/2 that would be optical/coax 2ch spdif. adat is usually termed/spoken in an 8ch reference. We'll see though.

Hi Lampdog, your 10 channels into the 001 sounds like a good output option.

The reason I was wanting to go optical back into the 4K is that I'm lookin at doing my final mixs on an analogue board - rather than in Pro tools- keen to experiment with mixing in analogue.

I am aware that the 4K is not an analogue device

Digi 003 - 8 analogue outputs + 2 channels of Analogue from the 4K = 10 channels of analogue running into a mixer.

the 4K is converting from optical to analogue giving me 2 extra channels to mix with in analogue.

I've noticed many peeps that are so literal that they would never think they can use something for something else.
It isn't a stretch to think that maybe you can use the main outs hard left/right to get 2 additional mono outs.

But I guess the point is IS it a stretch to try and use the 4k as a analog mixing board.
Now if you do that, and output it back to the mixer while mixing, that would create an audio loop wouldn't it?
In that case it's not the smartest thing to do now is it?
