so if you sample an instrumental, and transpose it a few notes up or down,
what happens to the frequency spectrum?

why dont u try it out and see for urself?

it gets brighter if you tune it up and muffled if you tune it down.

use an eq or your mpc´s filters to compensate for that.

the frequency spectrum literally shifts the exact same way and amount that you transpose.

it is a 1:1 translation though, that's why it sounds weird, because that is not very natural.

i'm a big fan of pitching stuff down and then boosting the high end using an extremely mild lowpass filter with high resonance

It does get a little rumbly in the bottom if you pitch it down far though.. depends on the sample of course... Let's say it's a '74 Jazz quartet sampled off a vinyl record.. And all four are goin' crazy (as these types tend to do..) ...
