Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

Hi guys, new MPC User here, and it seems I have unwittingly bought a messed up machine.

Problem - tried re-sampling a sample into 8 bit, but it told me there was not enough memory. The manual says that there must be more than 4 programs empty of data before re-sampling can be carried out.

This is the first sample I have recorded into the MPC! There is nothing else saved into the MPC.

I press shift 6 to go to the Drum Program menu, and only Drum 1 is highlighted. I really don't know what I'm doing by this point, but I get the feeling something isn't right with the machine. Already discovered the Note Variation Slider isn't working either....

Can anybody offer some advice or guidance? Would be really grateful for it.

Maybe it's a good idea to tell us what MPC you have, what OS and that sort of things..
Did you try it with another (shorter) sample? Have you got enough RAM?

ok look the best thing i can tell you is DONT RESAMPLE IN THE MPC.
it can take up to an hour to resample a few seconds of audio...seriously...an hour, for just a few seconds.

now, about your problem, you probably should trust what the machine says and realise that you don't have enough memory to do it. you probably have a sample in there that's big, and in order to resample it the mpc has to make another copy of it...how much ram is in the machine? how large is your sample?

i dont think your machine is broken i think your understanding of it is not up to speed yet.

now, having said that, again, really consider if you want to resample...a 4 second audio file will take 20 minutes to resample, and its not like you get some magical gritty sound of it...you just get a crappy resampled sample and youve wasted a serious amount of time watching your screen burn in because you will have no indication of how far along the process is going.

OK, a few details -

Model - Akai MPC 2000XL MCD (Blue)
Operating System - Version 1.2

Standard RAM - the Akai has not been fitted with an Expansion Board.
The sample I was trying to re-sample was approximately 8.1 seconds.

I think you're right regarding my understanding of the unit, but I just thought it slightly odd that there was not enough memory to re-sample, when that was the first sample I had attempted to record on to the machine.
Presumably when talking about memory here, we are talking RAM? perhaps that explains why there was not enough memory as the MPC hasn't been expanded.

I was wondering why only one option was highlighted within the Drum Program menu (Drum 1)? I was only made aware of this because the manual states that -
"As re-sampling uses program memory, there must be more than 4 programs empty of data before re-sampling can be carried out."

As far as I am aware, There are MORE than 4 programs empty of data.

I know the Note Variation Slider is broken because I tested it using the Diagnostic tool.
