Anyone have recommendations for compact flash drive models to use with the ASR-10?

The ones I've found online have so far been way too expensive. Preferably I'd like to find one that is hot-swappable but I could live without that if the price was right.

Thanks, tried that but the only ones that seem to be available are 'non-hot-swappable' off ebay for near to £140 shipped or for stupid money from mpcstoragesolution.com (they were asking double what I paid for my ASR).

It's not possible to find Spyrus MCDISK anymore and from searching over the last few days I've not been able to work out any other models of external drives that people have working yet. If anyone has one and is able to decipher the model then let us know please.

You may be looking for a while, sorry to hear the link didn't help. it's old technology and people probably aren't as interested it in anymore as say 10 years ago. Me, I've always had floppies in mine, and never ventured farther than that.

Actually it did help. I went through a few of those links to double check if there was anything I've missed and eventually found this -

EDIT: There was a thread about it on here somewhere. It's been tested on the ASR-10, here's a link to the Ensoniq section of the HxC forum for anyone else interested -

Thanks again. :)

what type of floppy drive is the internal floppy on the ASR-10 keyboard? is it IDE or SCSI? and also, is it possible to replace the internal floppy drive with an internal CF or SD card drive?

Check out the links in my post above if you're interested in using SD cards in place of the floppy drive.

I actually have that floppy-emulator (SD) in one of my ASR-10's.
So if there is anything you wonder, just ask.

Thanks, actually I have a load of questions if you don't mind.. :)

How easy / neat was it to install in place of the floppy drive?

I'm thinking about doing this but the main thing holding me back is the ASR-10 needing to boot the OS from the floppy drive. If it was another sampler that didn't require a disk to boot every time I turned it on I'd probably just gone ahead with it already. I'm a bit concerned of rendering my ASR-10 useless though by not having the OS ready on an SD card.

Did you have much trouble getting the OS image onto an SD card? Any issues with the loader software?

I don't currently own a Windows PC, so although I could borrow/pickup something it makes it a little bit more of a hassle to be playing around with getting the SD floppy emulator working.

How did you go about backing up stuff you had on floppy (OS, Waveboy FXs, samples)? I don't have a SCSI hard drive currently though I guess I could borrow one but again it makes it a bit more of a mission!

Thanks in advance, would be cool to hear how you got on with it..

I was thinking the same thing. Also from those links and bids I saw the thing hanging out of the asr. Do you have yours mounted on the inside like the floppy was? And what about the buttons? I saw different configs where the buttons were in different locations...

I don't mind at all :)

The installation was easy. It has the same connectors as the floppy drive.
Right now, my emulator is hanging a bit loose, similar to as 'sparq' describes. But I'm working on it...at this point I've cut a hole in that plastic thing (where you can lay your floppys) and mounted the screen in it. So if you have any kind of soldering skill, it's just a question of creativity.
The emulator is as wide as the floppy drive and has screw holes, so you are able to mount it...but maybe you have to drill some holes in the ASR.

It's the same thing with it's buttons, if you have a soldering iron, you can put them wherever you want to.

There's no trouble getting the OS onto the SD-card.
Just download the emulator software from their homepage and the OS-image for the ASR ( http://www.soundcentral.com/download/ke ... r10353.zip ) and then load/export the OS-image through this software onto the SD-card (requires SD-reader on your computer).
For the emulator to work with the ASR-10 you also need a config file, wich you create with the emulator software. In this config settings there's an autoboot function, but I haven't used it so I will only mention that it exist.

If you're thinking about getting the emulator, I recommend you to get a SD-card with a high class. I had class 4 before and had some troubles when I tried to load files, but since I got a SD-card with class 10 all does problems got fixed...though the card i'm using now is like the cheapest one I could find on the market, so sometimes i get disk errors when i try to save bigger files, but i can bet it's just the card's fault, cause it always works after a couple of tries.

About the back up...
The Floppy drive, in my ASR with the emulator, died shortly after I had bought the ASR so I didn't have much to back up, so I didn't care about that really. But I think it would be possible to dump your floppies, using a computer and the emulator software onto the SD-card.

I personally think that if you already have a working floppy drive, there's no bigger reason to get a floppy emulator...though, if your floppy drive is dead and you miss the scsi port or you just want to get rid of your floppy disks and want to have everything on a SD-card instead, it does the job.
It's a floppy emulator, it emulates the floppy drive, nothing more, nothing less.

Hoped that answered your questions! :)
