Direct Recording Vocals into MPC-2500

Does anyone know if I can direct record vocals using a phantom-powered Shure Beta 87-A, or, a non-phantom powered BETA 58-A? If not, What kind of mic do I need? If I'm using the "Record IN" quarter-inch outs on the MPC 2500, do I need balanced or unbalanced outs for recording vocals?

You need a preamp.

or you could use an sm58 with an xlr to 1/4" balanced mic cable and just use the trim knob on the 2500 to get your level right.

the 2500 has no phantom power so no phantom powered mics, but as nod said, dynamics will work.

The unmatching impedances will make the SM58 not sound really good.

get an interface or a digital multitracker or whatever... but don't plug a mic directly into your mpc. it's gonna sound like ass...

Would it be a mixer preamp or an instrument preamp? I started looking at microphone pre-amps and turns out I'm dumb. I found this one, would this work?

Yes it can work with this preamp but the sound will prolly be far from great.

It depends of what you expect.

You can also use a DJ mixer that has a mic input.

Just google allen and heath zed 10 mixer. This is what i use to record to audio tracks in jjos. It wont cost you much more than the mic pres you have been looking at it is a good sounding little desk that you can do loads with. It has a record bus which means you can route any of the six channels into the mpc record in just by pressing a switch on one or more channels. You could also use one of the sends. I have this patched permanently to record in of the mp. I route vocals , synths guitars at the flick of a button straight into audio tracks. I am trying to work 100% in the mp no computer.

Its pres sound as good if not better than the cheap budget pres and it supplies phantom power to condenser mics . You could also mix down and eq with it. The only thing you dont get with it is a compressor but I dont compress on the way in anyways.

Dont get the zed 10 fx though its more money and the fx are no better than in the mp. Good luck

Second tha zed line. Although i have the 10 fx, got it for 260 at GC with their regular speacials. i dont too much use the effects on the mixer but the sound and fact of equing on the way in really helps when sampling for me. just my .02
