Question about resampling with external effects

I want to run sounds from the MPC through my SP-404 for effects, then be able to resample back into the MPC.

I have been a lurker here for a while and I know I will be told to use the search function, but I did and I'm still a bit confused...

I read this:

Exactly which cables do I run where? (I understand the concept MPC --> 404 --> MPC --> SPEAKERS) I'm just not sure which setup is best.

Which should I sample from: DIGITAL, ANALOG, or MAIN OUT? Where do I connect the input from the 404 into the MPC? If my MAIN OUT is going into the 404, what out should I use to connect my MPC to the speakers?

For reference: The SP-404 has RCA lines in/out, 1/4" headphone out, and 1/4" mic in.

Hey man, here's what I do, and it's a great way to do it. (I go through a moog so my cabling is different) but i'll write this according to the cables you'll need for your 404...
First off you'll need 2 sets of 1/4" to RCA (paired) cables. Take one set, plug the 1/4" ends into the output 7 & 8 on your MPC, then take the RCA ends of that same cable and plug them into the Line In on your 404. Take the second set of cables and plug the RCA ends into the Line Out of your 404, then take the 1/4" ends and plug them into the Record Inputs on your MPC.
This means that you don't have to spend time unplugging and replugging cables everytime you want to run something through the 404. So, anytime that you want to send something through the 404, you go into the mixer window on the MPC, then change the outputs of the desired pad to output 7/8 (if the sound is stereo) or either 7 or 8 if the sound is mono...
Make sure that you turn on the 'input thru' and that you go into the 'record' screen and turn the monitor on.
The best part about doing it this way is that you can hear the sounds going through the 404 while the rest of the beat is playing normally. Sometimes you can route a sound through other devices to resample it, only to find out that what sounded good on it's own does not sound good with the rest of the beat.
This way you can tweak all the goodies on the 404 until it sounds just right with the rest of the beat... and you can leave your speakers hooked up the way they are already...

One more question: If my RECORD IN 1/4" inputs are taken, what do I sample my turntable/mixer into? My mixer has has the red/white RCA outs and the MPC only has on digital input. Will I need to get some sort of red/white RCA to digital adapter?

UPDATE:

I bought an RCA to Dual RCA (Y cable) assuming that RCA and Digital cables were the same because they fit the same way, but I am getting no audio from the DJ mixer to the Digital In on the MPC when I'm in record mode...

Same looking rca connection, but are not spec'd the same. It won't work.

mpc digital in are, digital, and it's actually stereo.

Alright cool. Any idea on what I should do from here then? I need to figure out how to get the mixer's RCA out to the MPC. I haven't been able to find a cable/adapter that goes RCA-Digital yet...

Mixer analog out cannot work with mpc digital in, cannot work with it, cannot.

Does your mixer have a digital out? If so, connect that to the mpc digital in.

Also RCA digital cables are made different than analog RCA cables. They are physically the same shape, but, they are different made wires, different gauge and different quality.

My mixer doesn't have a digital out, so I guess I'm out of luck for now

I currently have a Numark M3.

I would use that option, but I'm running the setup that was suggested in this thread (analog record in is occupied).

My current setup is:


MPC ---OUTPUTS 7/8 (1/4") to LINE IN (RCA)---> SP-404 ---LINE OUT (RCA) to RECORD IN (1/4")---> MPC ---STEREO OUT (1/4")---> INTERFACE

I'm trying to work this into the picture for recording:

TURNTABLE ---> NUMARK M3 ---> MPC?

UPDATE:

I ended up finding a workaround.

I bought 2 RCA to Mono 1/4" adapters. I connected the right channels of both the mixer and the 404 to one adapter, plugged that in to the right RECORD IN and did the same with the left channels. Works perfectly.

Keep in mind that running your 404 through a mixer will lower the quality of sound unless your mixer is higher end... if you want to keep quality at it's best, just unhook the 404 when you need to sample into the mpc and hook the 404 back up when you're done sampling your records...

The 404 isn't going through the mixer, only the turntable.
