Roland MV 8800 to go with my 3000? anyone use both?

I love my 3000 and it's staying for good for sure... but at this point, i really need some more modern features - i don't use a DAW / pc at all and would rather not if i can help it. Sample chopping can be nice on the 3000, but when you want to chop into 32 pads etc it just takes so long.. So i been looking at the MV-8800, wondering if it's worth getting that to chop samples and run them out of , and make use of all the on board voices / synth emulations etc.. I would be looking to use the mpc as sequencer and for drums, so i keep the MPCs timing, but then i would want to record that onto the 8 audio tracks of the MV. Anyone know if this is possible (sounds like it should be) and if it's a smooth enough way to work? Any drawbacks to that or alternative suggestions? (i'm a newbie if it doesnt show already ) thanks in advance!

Why not, the mv has pretty decent fx all with quite a lot of tweak-able parameters...

The 8 audio tracks is not something you can do 8 tracks at one shot because there is no 8 ins. I believe you can do 2 tracks via the analog ins and 2 spdif... and I believe you can do both at the same time.

If you are avoiding DAWs... the mv might actually be a good option. it has a lot of daw like features for a drum machine.

512 of ram is a nice feature.

I used the 3ooo and the MV 8ooo together for a while, but after about a month I found myself not using the MV so I sold it and went back to my laptop setup
it's a great machine but it slowed me down a lot, but you might be different
you can get an 8ooo for a good price, I got mine for $45o so if it interests you I'd go for it

thanks for the replies! hmm yes mr.d that's a bit of a drawback no 8 ins, but could be worked round i guess...it's definitely tempting for the price cos i'm broke! Kknoel - Do you mean it slowed you down in comparison to DAW or mpc on it's own? also, is it possible to sequence all the MV's patches/ chopped samples etc on the MPC, and then record it onto the MV's audio tracks with the MPC's timing while still in the mv? (i heard not such good things about MV's quantise and obvs a shame to waste the mpc swing!) I ask cos i can imagine it being only geared to recording it's own sequencer, but it would be nice if i'm wrong! Sorry i am a bit clueless as to how that would work..Thanks in advance!

the mv sequencer and swing is fine.. it just takes playing around to get the feel you are after... where as the mpc's timing settings are already set up in a fine way. the mv has more settings to tweak.

You can sequence the mv with the 3000... but there isn't really a point in doing that... you will see when you explore the mv's pattern mode (which is neat for live use..) it has a mode where you can make sequences and then use the pads to trigger sequences as though they were loops. pretty sweet feature.

The mpc is more simple and easy going... but to me that is a feature almost... I like that about the 60.

thanks mr d, v helpful...so i guess the most straightforward thing would be to use the 3000 for drums (keeping the swing/timing im used to intact) and the MV for everything else, using the stereo outs of the mpc and mixing the drums in the box.. I'm a bit hesitant to stop using the mpc as a sequencer - i love the way it works and the precise timing is what the mpc is really good for in this age i suppose...but the mv does what i need! So, in theory i could use the mv to sequence half of it, and the mpc for the other half, and still sync them up fine? ie drums and bass on mpc / samples and touches / effects on the MV.. thanks for humouring me

it slowed down both my workflow and ideas because you have to click through a bunch of windows to do anything and switch between modes
I'm not knocking it in the slightest, it's a great machine, but it isn't good for the way I like to work
the 6o/3ooo were laid out to be more like instruments so in that regard they cater more to ideas on the fly than a MV does
