Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

The inquiry continues!

I'm looking to play live. And I have no plucking clue how I should go about doing so.

What I'm wondering is how I can possibly change sequences while changing the corresponding programs.

For example:

Program "Sounds 1" on DRUM 1: "Song 1"
Seq# 1: "Song Seq 1" (made from the sounds on Program "Sounds 1")

Program "Sounds 2" on DRUM 2: "Song 2"
Seq# 2: "Song Seq 2" (made from the sounds on Program "Sounds 2")

Does this make sense? (This question usually results in a loud "no")

When I try simply assigning DRUM with desired programs onto Sequences that should match with the program, only certain sounds come through, while it plays samples from other programs. So the drums and bass from Program #2 will be playing but instead of the flute loop I laid down from sounds in Program #2, some samples from another program are being played. Whaaaa?!!?!?

not sure... never tried doing that. is there a possibility to you using one program and filling up all 4 banks?

ive dealt with this a lot.

rule 1 is try to combine things into as few programs as possible - this way you dont have to load up new stuff.

the other helpful option is the 'PGM' field in the bottom right of the main screen. you can set this to load up any program into the same DRUM slot that the track is set to. if you hit open window on your program name you will see, and can change, it's program number.

things to be aware of
- this wont load the program if the track is muted
- things get weird if you've got multiple tracks set to the same DRUM slot, and you try to load in different programs via PGM field.
- things also get weird if programs share program numbers; be sure to open window on your program names and make sure each has a unique program change #.

try it out, make a sequence and in track 1 set the DRUM to DRUM1, and then have PGM field set to the number of some program you have loaded.
now make another sequence and in track 1 set the DRUM to DRUM1 again, and then have the PGM field set to the number of a different program.
when you switch sequences, the programs will change.

what i do is i dedicate tracks 61-64 as 'program loading tracks'. i set trk 61 to DRUM1, and then i set the PGM field to the correct number. i set trk 62 to DRUM2 and i set the PGM field to the correct number for DRUM2. yada yada...
this way i know they arent muted when the sequence starts and i dont have any conflicts because i dont have any program changes in any other tracks.
you can only have max 24 programs and 256 sounds in memory at one time.

the thought of that makes me laugh.. though with a cf reader it aint too bad I suppose (if you really needed to do that)

this is the biggest limitation problem i have with the xl. ive got memory management covered but i hit these limits all the time.

This is working!

Here's how it's done with program changes:

1. Load up about any amount* of different songs via their programs and matching sequences.
*This depends entirely on your set. If you're gonna be playing around 12 - 16 songs, you should save in smaller increments. That way when you have to load the next batch of your set it doesn't take 2 minutes because you're loading up 8 songs. Food for thought.

2. Assign each program a different PROGRAM CHANGE number. This is very important.

3. Go to the PGM field in the bottom-right corner of the MAIN SCREEN, just above VELO%. Hit OPEN WINDOW and make sure that TRANSMIT PROGRAM CHANGE IN THIS TRACK reads "YES".

4. Go through each SEQ and appropriately change the PGM field for every track in every SEQ.
Example: If PROGRAM#1 holds the sounds to be used in SEQ 1, 2 and 3, for each and every track, make sure every track is set to PROGRAM#1. If you're mixing and matching programs for one song this can still work.

5. Test out the program changes.
NOTE: I've noticed that some of the tracks I've recorded with 16 LEVELS turn out a bit funky. And by funky I mean the 16 levels aren't recorded. I'll probably just re-record them because I have no idea why it's missing and it's only on a couple of tracks that I use that. If you use 16 levels frequently you should figure out a cure to this strange happening.

6. Everything works fine! Awesome opossum.

7. Save ALL PGMS and ALL SEQ to some shnazzy matching name like "****".

8. Load up you're ALL files and jam out at the Royal Albert Hall. Make sure to dodge the flying, wet panties of fly looking 21 year old honeys who dig your beats and your set. It's never wise to trust a flying wet panty.

_______________________________________________________

I'd still like to figure out the 16 level bug. I'm going to be playing audio samples from movies while I'm waiting for my next batch of songs to load (should take around 45 seconds).

Big thanks to Tapedeck. They're right as well: lesser programs, less chances of strange weirdness occurring. Luckily all my songs have only one single program to it so I don't gotta trip.

Anybody else care to share their live set rituals?

never noticed any issues with 16 levels and i do use it quite a lot.

might want to double-check yer programming.

props for the awesome update.
