2000xl problems after updating

After updating this unit from 1.12 to 1.14 the zipdrive stopped working.

Also, it randomly freezes when entering Trim mode for example.


Shift -> Load. Atapi is not working anymore. It display's a message saying ''No floppy device''

I tried different zip disks but none is working. It freezes every other disk I try.

Any idea ?

well switch back to 1.20... I mean, theoretically 1.14 should work with your zip drive... but let's be honest... you should be using a card reader.

- OS v1.14 for the MPC2000XL ZIP or Floppy drives

- OS v1.20 for the MPC2000XL MCD drives only

I did not try OS 1.20.

I do not own this XL I am talking about. I'm trying to help a friend who is experiencing problems.

ahh okay... well you wont be finding OS 1.12 easily (I thought you were talking about os 1.20 but made a typo... seeing that only os 1.2 and 1.14 are available today)

anyways, you dont need os 1.12... os 1.14 is the best one and works fine... os 1.2 is the same thing but they removed a thing or two to enable IDE (non atapi) cf readers... (also known as the MCD)

I suggest reinstalling OS 1.14... but honestly, again.... getting rid of the zip drive is the best possible upgrade on the 2000xl. You can get working cf adapters for as low as 99 cents on ebay last time I checked..

No Idea on the Zip drive that stopped working, anyone? Really this can't be a software issue.

Zip drives are well known for crapping out... Click of Death.
I've gone through 2 Zip100 drives and 1 Zip250 drive on my 2000XL. I'm so glad I put a PCD-47B card reader in mine.

I have Zip drives on some of my gear and they work fine. The same with card readers. Until they fail, I will keep on using them. There is nothing wrong with using Zip drives as long as it's understood that they could die at any given moment. In some cases it is not worth the investment in time to put on in a machine.

I've had as many compact flash cards get corrupted and unrecoverable in the past year as Zip disks (two). Don't assume that Compact Flash is bulletproof.

APH, it is possible that when the OS was getting flashed it may have gotten corrupted.

I would have your friend reinstall the OS using a known good floppy disk and floppy drive. You can use a regular PC floppy drive, you don't need an overpriced "MPC" one.
