Need a cheap recommendation for a friend

Hey guys I'm looking for a sampler around the $250 range but all I know is MPC. Thinking of a used 500 but are there any worthy alternatives? Want just all the basic chopping and pad features.

Don't sleep on the Roland SP-404 either....should be able to find one in that price range, and it's more than capable of making dope tracks. MPC 500 would be a solid choice in that price range too, if MPC's are what he's going after. You might even get lucky and find a 2000/2000xl in bad physical condition, but still working, for that cheap. I did last year(2000xl.)
