Post your views and questions about the Akai MPC2500

Hi all, Im new here and I've got a live set booked in 5 weeks, I was going to use ableton and a controller, but I've got a brand new akai 2500 sitting here and as I like hardware, I think Id prefer to take it on stage with an effects unit rather then my laptop etc..

I dont really know how it functions, I've had a quick play and It seems quite nice.

What would be the best way to play an hour set with the 128mg? DO I make patterns of my beats as "sequences" and then just keep changing the sequence?

I basically want to get the drum loops and maybe some bass, then play various samples and hits over the loops and keep going thru my "stripped back" songs.

Also ordered the Pioneer rmx1000 effects to mash it all up a bit and be a bit busy on stage :-D

Thanks in advance for any feedback!

TO make The most of your MPC consider getting JJOS. It is a must.

That is a live 4 track recording with me playing on mpc1000 with JJOSXL, its more breaks and I do other stuff to as you can see on my soundcloud.
I am running FX, and hardware synths as well. You ould do this with your laptop by syncing a MIDI clock with your DAW if you so wish or put the MIDI in your MPC. THere are many ways to do it.
You have the right idea, in that you use sequencer to make your beats and basslines ect. The more samples you use, the less memory, so you gotta think smart.
The JJOSXL NDC as well as patterns make the MPC killa live. I can not stress that enough. These features will pay for them selves if you are gigging.
I could fit a few songs like above with out having to reload, as I am using drum kits I made myself and a break sample that is chopped up of course. good luck.

Thanks for the reply!

So can you load new banks on the fly, while a sequence is playing on the MPC ?

I wanted to do it all in the box really and not take anymore synths or laptop out with me..

Maybe I can keep big string sections on a USB and play them on a CDJ and have the MPC going thru the mixer too?

:hmmm:

Programs not banks, every program has 64 pads over 4 banks A B C D
You have to stop playing to load anything. But you can make a long set if you know what you are doing, and with CDJ you can make something for the time you load new project. Did you check JJOS?

Just got the JJOSXL, and things seem to be going into place, much prefer this!
Im going to rebuild all the drum sequences with kits I have processed, i think I can prob get the whole set in here.. might have to have some big string sections on the CDJ, but I think most will fit now that Im not sampling in each drum loop.

I have a couple of mindless questions tho :)

How do I name the Tracks in a sequence, so that when i'm muting and unmuting on the track mute page, I can see what the tracks are?

Also I'm prob going to rebuild bass riffs in the MPC rather than sample the loops, is there a piano roll or someway I can sequence the new patterns if I just load the C3 bass note?

Cheers

hit window / open window button on the name of the track from main screen.

If it's easier, you could do your sequences in a DAW, export to midi file on your computer, then LOAD-USB your MPC, drop your midi file in, & load it up. Then save it, in the MPC as a .SEQ & you're good to go.
There's lots of ways of using the mpc. its up to you to work out how you want to use it, but sequencing synths is a winner, cos 12 minutes max of audio isn't much.
I allocate 3 mins of samples to each sequence, & load up 4 sequences at a time for live-on-stage jamming, using the track mutes & a 8 stereo channel mixer to choose between:
kik tracks
snare tracks
percussion tracks
background fx tracks
Basslines (synth)
leads (synths)

Thanks Tapedeck.

Ive got the JJOSXL now and its smooth. I've gone through a couple of different sticks of memory that didnt work, but now I have a 256mb stick that actually works in the machine but still only holds 128mb in memory?? I went through the large thread about this, but it was mainly about the 1000.

Any idea why its not using the 256mb?
