Sorry if this isn't the place to put this. I was looking for what kind of effects you guys run outside of your MPC as I know the effects onboard are kind of limited. Should I be considering many racks, or just an all-in-one or like VST?

I had an eye on a good deal on a BOSS SX-700 and I want to use one with some synths I have and my MPC to make house music.

Any suggestions?

well, if you need a lot of different types of fx for a cheap price, get an all in one unit.... if you dont need every basic type of effect and you want to splurge on something more expensive.... get a single effect type of unit. You want analog filers to do sweeps... maybe get the mfc 42 or the filter factory (there is an analog filter thread around here with reviews and filter talk) ... you can use the computer, but you might find it easier to use those after you already recorded the 8 outs to the computer so you can add vst effect pluggins to those audio tracks.

Outside of mpc, usually the fx inside my audio interface.
Sometimes native efx in Reaper. Sometimes plugins in Reaper. Depends on what side of the gutter I wake up on that day.

My mixer has a few reverb efx, and then I run into Ableton where I don't mind getting some VSTs, BUT--if you had a choice between upgrading from JJOS1 to JJOS2XL or getting a EFX processor, what you would you do?

I've used JJOS2XL, and I like it but I feel I should gain a mastery over JJOS1 first, which I haven't had very long. Lol.

The effects on the MPC are cool but I like the idea of running hats on reverbs thats different than maybe the other drums. Though even an external efx would only be able to do one output... the mixer do one... and the mpc do one...

That's not really a logical question. Do you need effects more than advanced tools for your MPC? Only you can answer that one...

Before you splurge the cash on a cheap effects unit, you should track some ideas into Ableton and use their built in effects or plugins and make a call from there.

Hardware effects units often sit there gathering dust after the novelty has worn off and the limitations have sunk in.

I have a hard time seeing the question as illogical when it is just a question of what someone would do in a similar situation. I didn't ask what someone would suggest or what someone's grand advice would be--maybe it's illogical of me to think that people like to hold conversations?

And I agree, I think I'm getting some GAS from having had the MPC and really feeling inspired to do some stuff with it. Sometimes I get ahead of myself in thinking that other equipment will brighten up this feeling even more when I really should buckle down and work with what I have. So in that regard, thanks for reiterating, but please know I was simply asking what others value more in their experience as opposed to whats the "right way" to do something.

Usually when you people use "this or that" the two choices are somewhat similar is what Coz might be trying to say, hardware fx or jjos aren't.

Since those two are so far apart only you can answer that question as to what's more valuable to you and your production.

"what you would you do?"

Yes you did, soon as you made the question public.

Cmon now, really? It's stuff like that that maybe makes people not wanna converse with you in the first place.

I was being kind by using the word 'illogical' (which your question is), so don't take offence. It just seems like an unusual dilemma, but not one that I haven't experienced personally when I was starting out with other gear decisions.

The fact that you're split between upgrading to XL or buying a processor suggests you haven't got much money to play with, so in that respect I would advise you go the VST route where you can get a bunch of quality stuff for free. That will free up your funds for XL which is a great investment.

If you want to make House music, you quickly realise how effects heavy it is and how many layers of dynamic processing it takes to get a good sound. Not to mention stacks of automation. To achieve the same or similar with hardware takes a lot of investment and knowledge, but even then you majorly sacrifice the total recall ability of a good DAW.

If you just want something to play with, go ahead and buy a hardware processor. There's a lot of benefits, but the tradeoff is that you tend to get steered into the destructive use of effects. In other words, you can't undo the processing you apply to your sounds. This is especially problematic with reverb.

It's the LAW that an older head HAS to impart advice, so don't take what i say as a criticism. It's all still part of the conversation. 8)

I appreciate the clarification Coz, I really do. I wasn't trying to sound too defensive I was just trying to explain what I meant. I have read the forums enough to know that questions get asked about Apples to Oranges like things all the time (e.g. "Should I use a maschine or use a daw?") so I felt like I should clarify that I wasn't doing that. I'd liken it to me asking someone at a store what they would splurge on.

Sorry for the defensiveness, it really wasn't meant to be there either--was just hoping to pick your guys brains is all.

No worries.

Like Debauch mentioned, a decent analogue filter makes a great investment. Plenty of effects processors have come and gone with me, but the MFC has been a mainstay since 2001.

the lexicon Mx200 series, has a feature where you can either use it as hardware only or hook it up via USB and use it that way (same for mx 300 and 400 i believe) ...kinda gives you both worlds (hardware OR computer daw)

but in my experiences, i've found that it is MUCH EASIER and MUCH CHEAPER to go software plugins instead of hardware processors.

when you have hardware, and you apply an effect...along down the line if you dont like the processed sound, you have do redo everything...as oppose to software, you just setup a delay or reverb on a Send and apply to whatever channel/sound you want and voila...if you dont like it, it takes all of about 3 seconds to undo it

i have an Sp 303 that i use for certain effects to beef up sounds BEFORE i track into my DAW (usually lo-fi filter, slight compression and/or eq)

for reverb, delay and any other effect that you would normally apply over to all or most sounds within a song, i wait until everything is in the daw.

Been using hardware efx processors since I copped the original alesis quadraverb then the q2 (which I still have) back when.

Plus two other lexicon hardware units that I don't use but keep 'em just in case I find a need for them.

Strickly in the box efx these days with the formentioned exception.

that boss looks like it would do a great job.
extrenal effects units work really well with a 1k or 2.5k mpc (or any mpc that can resample). it''s so simple to send out through the individual outs and resample.

i find it much simpler and more direct than applying VST effects in a DAW. also my lexicon sounds way nicer than any of the effects in Logic.

there are plenty of great rack units around for under $200. which is also probably much cheaper than buying software.
