Exchange tips and tricks for the Akai MPC4000

@Feline1 - Thats exactly what im after.. What make/model fan is it? (Silenx by any chance?)

@jimfowler - Thanks, that gives me a good idea now of its loudness, which seems very low yet still just audible from what you described. Its got good reviews.
I think i will just get this fan and use the "Low Noise Adapter" it comes with like you said to spin the fan @ either 2400 or 1600 RPMs.

While we are on this topic..
Im pretty sure the only reason Akai put a fan in the 4000 was to cool the unit/Hard Drive down. So even not using any fan at all (if youve installed an SSD/CF card) should be fine. Why are there no fans in the other older mpc's without HD's installed :?:

I always wanted to ditch the fan and the hard drive, and try to retrofit a heat sink.

Can't remember, sorry, it was years ago (and so the same part number probably isn't even still available anyways!) Have a read at old threads, though, cos it was all discussed at the time.

Funny enough... today I bought the Silenx Effizio 80mm fan from Fry's Electronics. I could care less about the built in blue LED.

Not bad for $10 since it has a 3 year warranty, fluid dynamic bearings, extra quiet (15dBA) and extracts more air (32 cfm) than my stock MV8000 fan.

Any issues with the fan replacement? I might go get one of those silenx fans and take out the led light. Isnt that annoying?

thanks for the info, replacing the fan in mine also. Once I hit no spin I hear the fan, so its gotta go  Its not bad if other things are on (AC, TV, etc)

I have often though of ditching the fan all together and adding heat sink, in place of the fan

So.. referring to this..

"dimensions are identical to the original. two quick solders and you're up and running. "

I have this fan, but the internal (pre-existing) fan is a 2 (black & red) wire.. this new fan is 3 wires (black, red & yellow and has a completely different fitting...)

Any idea how I get this fitted ... or care to shed any more light on exactly what was needed to be done to fit this fan into the 4000 ?

You won't need the yellow wire. The third wire (yellow) is usually used to adjust the speed of the fan.

I think it's not that easy to create a custom heatsink which could cover all warm elements.
