Is Auditioning Slices from an external controller a desired function?

I love the fact that the Ren slices a sample and automatically maps the slices to pads for immediate playback.

But even better, I think it would be great to have an option to audition/select a slice while in Chop Mode from an external controller.

Currently, an external controller will only trigger the program assigned to the current track.

What are your thoughts on this idea?

I dont understand why you would need to do this. Can you elaborate?

yeah this would be a good idea was thinking this a few weeks ago. you want to hook up
your keyboard so you can auction one sample from one end of the key range against another at the other end great for big samples

and as an extra would be good if you could just highlight the samples you want to keep
and get rid of the rest

this is sort of stuff i want done first rather than that mixer nonsense, the ren should be sampling dream machine that's it mpc roots.

I have been using keyboard workstations for quite some time to sample and chop. It is just so nice to be able to have 61 to 88 keys in front of you to trigger slices instead of navigating through pad banks.

This is especially convenient when sequencing. Depending on the number of slices I am using, I will record into the Ren with a keyboard instead of the pads versus cycling through pad banks.

@Danny
I agree with you 100%. The Ren/Studio should be a sampler's wet dream. I think developing the sampler should be a higher priority over the next few updates.

good idea, and one thing that i really liked about maschine.. if you have a midi controller hooked up it will automatically do two things -

might be a bit hard to understand for people who dont get the difference between mpc and maschine "track" system or how the pads work vs pgms in the mpc.. but anyways

lets say you have a single note or drum sound on a pad thats not chopped up.. if you select the pad, the midi keyboard you have hooked up automatically plays that note across the keyboard chromatically. pretty sweet... dont even have to push any buttons first or toggle anything

if you have a sample chopped to a pad, and you play the keyboard.. it will play the chops in order instead of that single note chromatically (NOT what jah talkin about, ren already does this.. my bad)

i understand that the ren couldnt do the first and the second at the same time because of the way the pads/tracks/pgms are different than maschine.. BUT i think its a great idea to add in, and could be some sort of toggle perhaps?

the toggle would be like.. midi keyboard ---> pad (my first example) or midi keyboard ----> pgm (second example)

edit : not all this is right, my bad ^^^

On this topic, both the Ren and Maschine can't accomplish what I am talking about here. I am talking about entering Sample Chop Mode and instead of the pads auditioning chops...a MIDI keyboard auditions the chops. If you try this exact procedure with Maschine, it will play the sample that is chopped across the keyboard chromatically. It doesn't play individual slices. You can't strike a key and it selects the corresponding slice....not in the manner I am describing.

While we have a lot of feature requests, I don't believe the Ren should operate exactly like similar products on the market (and vice versa).

As far as playing a note chromatically across a keyboard in the Ren, you simply place a note on a pad of a Keygroup program. And once you have a chopped program assigned to a track, playing your MIDI keyboard will play back the chops in order. MPCs have worked this way for a decade.

word, makes sense

i guess i liked how easy it was on maschine (no addition steps - at all, when playing a single note chromatically)

but i didnt register that you were talkin about in chop mode, my bad

and once again , i LOVE THE REN AND PREFER IT OVER THE MASCHINE - so dont for a second think im tryin to turn it into a maschine debate or simply wanting ren to simply copy maschine

Yeah...I wouldn't be interested in that debate. I have been trying to stay away from discussing competing projects as nothing new can be said that hasn't already been said before....at least not until new updates are released. lol

Really just a redundant waste of code.
You have the Ren (or Studio) right in front of you to easily press and audition a slice, why would someone feel reaching for the external controller easier or more efficient.

No one is against an improvement if it actually improves something, but many of the request people make are just too much of a waste.

The focus has got to be on debugging and real workflow enhancements.

We know one day Akai will stop the development and who wants that to leave us with a lot of bells and whistles but no stability or real workflow enhancements?

Because anyone used to an ASR-10 chopped on keys, and many of us chop entire songs up, we can go thru the pads, and do,but obviously it's nicer to chop physical, then shift this,or screen that ;)

I do agree though there are alot of other improvements to be made, but seeing as Akai doesn't really voice what they will do or won't do, I think Jah has as valid point as anyone to ask for this feature, because to many of us, it'd be a huge workflow enhancement vs the screen n shift/pad etc..

at the end of the day though, there's always work arounds
