I just got bought a turntable with receiver and powered speakers. I can plug the speakers. The receiver is a Technics SA -212, Stanton STR 8-20, and the powered speakers are Acoustic Research.

I'm able to plug RCA outs of the turntable directly to the speakers and I can hear the record at a pretty low volume. Now let me explain how I hooked the speakers up to the receiver. I connected the turntable to the receiver phono in. Next I connected the tape out to the speakers. This seems to bypass the volume control on the receiver since it only played at a pretty loud level. Is there any possible way to hook these speakers up and have control over volume?

I also have an audio interface so I want to eventually get the turntable to go through that and into the MPC 1K to sample some sounds.

..now attach the grounding to receiver, cut RCA's out of speaker cables, and attach raw cables where it's written SPEAKERS - this will give you volume control from receiver to speakers.. TAPE out to mpc record in and ..preferably mpc out to AUX on receiver. Now you can sample on phono tab, and make BOOM on aux.. no?

I just tried it again going listening with headphones through the headphone jack. The volume controls work but it's very sensitive. Sometimes the receiver plays through only the left channel sometimes only the right. It seems that there's some connection issue in the volume knob perhaps, like scratchy potentiometers.

Thanks Bugfix, because of your suggestions I I tried hooking up the cable wires directly again but there was no volume. I wiggled it around and got some sound. Unfortunately this wasn't before jumping from scratchy to crazy loud in my apartment. Sorry neighbors! So do I just need some contact cleaner apparently for the receiver volume potentiometer. I have some compressed air called "Cleaning duster". Will this work or will I need something else?
