Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

Hey there,

i have a problem with installing a Iomega ZIP100 Drive in my 2KXL.
There was a floppy drive in my 2KXL but i wanted to upgrade this to a ZIP Drive, so i removed all parts from the floppy drive. Then i soldered the power cable to fit on the ZIP Drive.


My MPC doesn't recognize the ZIP-Drive. So here are some pictures from my parts for installing:

1. Iomega ZIP100 ATAPI Drive, Jumper set to MASTER.

2. Self-soldered Power Chord.

3. 40-Pin IDE/ATAPI ribbon.

I tested the ZIP Drive in my PC -> it works. I already put samples on it.

And i've tried some connecting variations with the direction of the IDE-ribbon, but the MPC says still "can not found Floppy device" in loading screen. The cable i use is from my other 2KXL (works in there with a CF-Reader), and it works fine with that. But it doesn't work with the ZIP-Drive.
So the ribbon isn't the problem.

The ZIP Drive even flashes up when i start my MPC, but in loading screen the MPC doesn't find the ATAPI Device, just Floppy and SCSI

but i removed the parts of the Floppy drive as you can see on the pictures.



So who has any idea what the problem could be?

For the internal Zip100, Zip250 & Zip750 drives in my 2000XL, I had soldered all the wires from the mother board to the female molex connector to get 5VDC (red wire) & 12VDC (yellow wire). I did it just for the hell of it and all of my Zip drives worked.

First, thanks for your answer.

10 minutes ago i tested the ZIP Drive in my other 2KXL.

I connected it the same way as in my other MPC, and it works. So the Drive is ok, now i am scared that maybe the IDE/ATAPI socket on my MPC mainboard is broken... :(

Check the pins in the IDE connector on the MPC mother board to see if they are bent.
Reinstall everything making sure a good contact/seating to the connections.

As Juke suggested

Some models of Zip drives need 12V to power the drive motor. Is your other MPC supplying 12V to the Zip Drive?

Measure your power leads and make sure you are getting the correct voltages. Just because the LED on the zip drive lights, does not mean it is getting the correct level of power to function.

Hey there,

thanks for your answer. I guess my other MPC supplies the same voltage, because i used the same power ribbon for testing it.

But i will try it a second time to get sure.
How do i have to connect the 12V to the zip drive? Coming from the red cable from the MPC Mainboard and then splitting it into 5V and 12V? Or do i have to put another cable into the plug on the MPC mainboard to have an extra ribbon for 12V?

The big white sticker on the Zip drive says the same like on this picture: +5, 0.8A Max.

The ribbon cable is for data. Operation power is not transferred through the ribbon cable.

The power is transferred through the molex connector. Red = 5V, Yellow = 12V, Black = GND.

The 12V would have been supplied from the motherboard through the molex connector on the Yellow wire.

Since your Zip Drive does not specify 12V, I would say that it doesn't need it to operate.

Have you used a mulitmeter to ensure you are getting 5V on the power cable? Just because the LED lights does not mean the MPC is supplying the correct power. Can you confirm you are getting 5V at the power connector?

Which version of the OS is on the MPC?

Does the card reader from your other MPC work on both MPCs?

Yeah, sorry for that bad english. When i said 'ribbon' i meant 'cable', not really the ribbon.

I will check it with a Multimeter to see if i'm getting 5V through the cable.

I have the OS 1.14 on my MPC, should be no problem as i think.

That would be my next step, to check if the card reader will work in the MPC where the ZIP drive doesn't work.

Okay, i've tested my 'broken' MPC with the card reader from my working MPC.

Here's the setup, originally from my working MPC:

It worked!
The only difference is the power cable i guess.

So that is the problem i think?!

...or the ZIP drive is broken. Could be an other possibility.

But because the power cable of the card reader is fixed with some glue in it i can't try the power cable from the card reader in combination with the ZIP drive.

But i also ordered a cable and in a few days i can test it with a new 4-pin cable. Hopefully it will work!

I have never seen a card reader which required 12V to operate. The 12V line supplies power to spin the motor. Since the card reader has no moving parts it only needs 5V to operate.

As Simon suggested, it is possible that your Zip Drive needs 12V to operate. But it leads me to believe that the cable you soldered is not supplying the proper voltage. A new cable should certainly solve this issue.

Were you able to measure the voltage on the cable you constructed?

He seems to have an original 2 wire 5V only MPC cable, that has been extended, in one MPC, here...

...not sure what he means about the power cable being fixed with glue in the card reader, does that mean it is fixed at the card reader end, in which case how could he test the Zip drive with that power cable?...

...or, is the power cable fixed at the MPC main PCB end of the cable, so that he can't remove it to test it with the Zip in the other MPC?

If it is fixed at the MPC main PCB end of the cable, maybe it is soldered directly to the connector pins on the PCB, or directly to the PCB.

Where is he buying a new 4 pin cable, with the correct connector on one end to attach it to the connector on the MPC main PCB.


I am a little confused as to exactly what is and isn't working.
