Hi all,

I've just scored an MPC2500 with JJOS Free 3.10 and I have a midi problem. Put simply:

- I have the MPC2500 connected to a Korg DW8000 synth
- The synth doesn't respond well to quick notes
- The MPC appears to send 'Note Off' midi messages (Velocity 0) right before every 'Note On' is sent
- The speed of this causes the DW8000 to trip out and not play properly (it's like 2 notes played very quickly)

Is there a way of stoping the MPC2500 sending note offs before note ons in a sequence?

This would solve it completely. Amusingly, as you're playing the pads on record it plays fine because the note offs are inserted afterwards.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. Does this apply to the midi outs as well? The issue seems to be caused by what the MPC is sending in a sequence. It does this:

1 NOTE OFF (quickly before the note on)
2 NOTE ON
3 NOTE OFF

When every other sequencer I use seems to send

1 NOTE ON
2 NOTE OFF

It's the quick NOTE OFF before the NOTE ON everything that causes the issue I think.

Thanks

OK, i've had a look at the different OSs and it turns out only the Free version of JJOS 3.10 exhibits the double note off behaviour. So, I either need to downgrade to the Akai OS or spend money on a JJOS upgrade. The screenshot below shows the double note off behaviour. Very annoying!

Very strange indeed. Just a couple thoughts:

Does this occur when the track is in Drum and MIDI mode? Can't imagine it'd make a difference, but worth a look at.

Do you have just the MIDI out from MPC to MIDI in on Korg? Is there a MIDI loop going on?

Does this happen both when you play live and record sequences?

EDIT:

Is the program in Mono? I don't use the free version so it's hard to know if this is relevant.

And one more: Can you turn on more detail in your MIDI monitor (hex, binary)? I'm curious to see if those duplicate note-offs have different values. "Note Off" and "Note On Velocity 0" are similar but are different commands.

Hi,

Firstly, thank you for your help guys. To answer your questions:

1. It's the same in Drum and Midi mode
2. There's no midi loop. This is coming from the MPC straight into my midi interface (i've tried two interfaces and they are both the same).
3. I don't think there is a mono mode for external midi in JJOS, and all parameters i've tried show the same Note Off behaviour.
4. Amusingly, when you play it in, it works fine as expected, then on the loop round, the sequencer adds the Note Offs.
5. Hopefully the following will help. This is 4 notes from the mpc sequencer (notice it starts with a Note Off!)

In hex:

Does this help?

Thanks!

I've reported the bug and it looks like it won't be fixed due to support finishing for JJOS Free.

Oh well, looks like I'll have to upgrade. Shame there isn't an entry level OS for the MPC2500 like the MPC1000 as I only want to fix the bug and at this stage do not want the extra features. $59 sure looks better than $123!

Thanks,
