If your saying the way the ren works at the mo with no controller mode is better than having one im confused as to why? why leave anything to be desired if its clearly possible? at such a price too this is crazy

why would I want to spend so much and have to program that myself or be ripped off by having to buy it from a 3rd party when it should be a feature on the ren as standard

After 3 threads and dozens of posts, perhaps I don't understand what you are trying to accomplish.

1. You can use the Ren's pads to record notes into Live's sequencer

2. It is possible to use Live as a sound module and the Ren as a sequencer

3. You can't use the Ren as a controller, Live as the sequencer, and the Ren as a sound module.

4. You can use Live to trigger the sounds in a program on the active track in the Ren

5. The Ren doesn't have a multitimbral mode where multiple Live MIDI tracks can sequence multi programs loaded inside the Ren.

No. What I said is that the Ren can be used as a controller without needing a controller map application. Plenty of software has MIDI learn function. Using this, you can map the Ren's buttons and knobs to the software. As of 1.3, if you want to customize the MIDI CC and Note data that the Ren transmits, you or a 3rd party will have to create controller map app. I believe there is freeware that will allow you to do this...but I don't see the point when you can just use the Ren's default settings.

Akai designed the Ren to function one way. You want it to function another way. You are not being ripped off. You must use the product as is. Or ask them to implement changes to use it the way you desire. But they are not obligated to make these changes. My best advice is to use the Ren for what it was designed to do and not what you hope it may do in the future.

but how did that person manage to set this up? what a completely useless video. it doesn't show us the configuration involved. just someone hitting some pads and turning knobs.

does anyone know of any 3rd party apps that exist which turn the ren into a generic controller? i presume no-one has written one yet..

switching between the 2 modes (1. controlling the mpc software and 2. as a midi controller in your DAW) on the fly would be amazing

I think the video was simply demonstrating that you can use the Ren as a generic controller for Battery and other VSTs. If you want to assign pads on the Ren to specific pads on Battery 4 then you have to first select the pad on Battery then go to the setup tab, half way up and to the right you'll see "key range", simply click the little grey/white circle so that it is white (which is the midi learn button) and now tap you pad on the Ren and it will now match up.

is this only possible in standalone mode? i can't seem to get any midi out of the ren when i'm using it as a plugin within ableton.

i'm talking about wanting to know the absolute basic settings so that i can map the ren knobs via midi to some other plugings in ableton (whilst there is an active mpc plugin).

i didn't think this was at all possible.

I'm not sure about Ableton Live but I primary use Reaper as my Daw and the way that I would do it in Reaper would be to make sure the REN is set to plugin mode in the preference menu, add a track with the VST that I want, and set up the REN so send midi to that track, after that you would use the midi learn function from your VST to map the REN's controller pads to the notes/pads of the VST. I have an old video that I made that may illustrate this a little better.

in logic x you can use the mpc ren as a midi controller!!!

you can play the exs24 sampler, massive and other Plug ins without problems.
and you can record all notes too!

but when you are loading the mpc plug in......it doesnt work!!

I´m sure you could setting a midi track on the REN.

When the MPC Software or the MPC plug-in is not loaded you even can send midi with the metal sensor on the q-link, it trigger notes ^^ same for the function button.

It´s how the REN communicates with his software/plugin.

But sending MIDI via a Midi Channel from the REN plugin to a channel in your DAW will work anyway. I used to make beat so with Kontakt 5 and Battery 3.
