Ensoniq ASR-10 help, for ASRonians.

No. I'm planning to record all of my drums in one take into the ASR-10, save it into a zip disk and import it to my computer/ chicken systems so I can get all my drums to fit into one instrument bank.
Thats the plan anyway.
If anyone could help or provide me with some instructions on how to do this with translator that would be very very appreciated

i don't understand why do you need to put them onto your computer to fit them into one instrument? you can do that in the asr

I'm guessing Translator is similar to ChySys' Ensoniq Disk Tools.

On that one you take a Win98 boot floppy (or just have Win98 installed, floppy must be internal on the PC no USB, won't work), and you can make ASR10 instruments on a full screen GUI.

It doesn't do anything you can't do on the machine, but it is nice to see all the layers and zones on the screen.

You can also take an already saved ASR instrument patch on a floppy and scope it out on the big GUI too.

Without SCSI on your ASR and the computer you run the Disk Tools app on it's pretty limited. If you have a class compliant MIDI interface or one with Win98 driver you can actually copy sounds over MIDI cables, but of course it takes HOURS. And really who's that much of a glutton for punishment?

But I'm pretty sure this is what was being thought of using Translator. Not sure if the poster who brought up Translator realizes the ASR itself can do all the instrument editing.

The reason why I want to use the computer is to save a bit of time, I have about 70 snare samples and it would be nice to think that it can do this all in one go.

I messaged Garth from Chicken Systems and he kindly provided me with some basic instructions.

--"Yes, Translator does this - it'll take the one file and split it up (looking for silence with parameters you set) and can write it back to a new EPS/ASR Instrument. Here's the Single Sample Map screen and you want the Split Incoming Sample parameters."


Because I dont have the full version of chicken sys, it's about 150$ I was just wondering if anyone else used this program and worked out how to do this

use awave studio make a keymap with all your drums save as sf2

and use translator to make a efe/eda file

the asr10 is good for 8 layers so you can make 8 different sounding kits that change to the velocity setting which make very expressive drums

its a workshop so i do video,s on how todo things and audio examples and example files if you want to learn how to use your asr10 to the max then all are welcome to use the workshop

as its about synthesis and sample creation its compatible to all samplers

Grabbed this sampler a while ago but procrastinated getting this checked out. Pictured screen happens at start up. I loaded a os disk in I believe I got off the computer and put on floppy. The screen doesn't change at all. Anybody seen this before?

I have a second ASR-10 that got fried. It's a US model and was plugged in to a UK mains without its step-down transformer. Of course it didn't stay turned on for very long.

I'm considering just selling it as 'for repair' or perhaps getting it looked at and re-selling it once fixed. Seems a shame to part it out as it's in pretty good condition and has a fan mod too.

Just wondering on what the deal is with getting this repaired - am I likely to be looking at replacing a few fuses/transformers or the whole main board? I know next to nothing about electronics if that wasn't already obvious from my post!

Quick question how easy is it to fix a dead key?

Plus is there no way of bypassing floppys and loading the os and instead have a cf card or is scsi the answer?.

I personally would not want to go through replacing a dead key on the ASR. The ASR is old and creaky as it is. The less you open it up and mess with it, the better.

You can load the OS from anything hooked up to the SCSI port, Zip, CF, CD, etc.

If you are looking at copping a broken or semi-broken ASR, unless you know what you are doing, I would NOT recommend it. Buy one that's as mint as possible. It will save you a TON of heartache and headaches.
