Hi everybody, I'm new here, so I'm gonna introduce myself quickly cuz I definitely am gonna spend some time on here with some of you guys...
Basically I just started using an MPC 1000 using the native OS and goin through some stuff in the manual. So far I've always made my beats on computers with Protools, VST's and all that.

Anyway, here's something I really don't get. Here's how my session is set up right now:

track 1: sample chops (with pads set to mono, and mute group 1)
track 2 to 5: individual drum sounds (kick snare etc)
track 6: 808's with pads set to mono, and mute group 2.

When all these tracks are played together, my sample chops on track 1 get muted sometimes, as if too much shit was playing at the same time, and it couldn't handle it.
But I'm sure I must have set something wrong, I can't really believe that it can only handle 5 tracks at a time...

So when I mute track 6 (my 808's) and track 5 (cymbals) for example, everything will play smoothly with no stupid mutes on my sample chops on track 1.

Does anybody know what could be the problem? :hmmm:

Thanks for your time!

More than 2 mute groups maybe, separate into more mute groups so they don't cancel out other sounds you need playing?

Did you check mono/poly programs? Same thing, use separate programs for mono and/or poly so that sounds don't cut off other sounds in that program.

Did you try any of that yet?

Maybe you got to many stereo sounds, also set your drums to have mono voice overlap. If any of them should be poly, it would be the snare, but not necessarily. After you will have all tracks playing I doubt you will hear tails are overlapping. Doesn't give you nothing except lower polyphony :-D

and now you have samples that are muting each other out... think it's a coincidence?

as mentioned... learn the difference between mono/poly programs and just use that for having pads cut each other off. from what i'm reading you have no actual need for mute groups here. it can be accomplished with a mono program.

is track 6 [the 808 channel] just using 808 samples or are you using it to control an actual 808 via MIDI?? if it's a MIDI channel, make sure you have no drum program selected on that track.

Thanks for your replies, turning my kick snare and hats to mono solved the problem.
The reason why I needed to use Mute Groups is for my 808's, because I had different 808 notes playing on each pad, so they couldn't just overlap and play at the same time...
And @crossings, no my 808's were just audio sampled, no midi involved.

ironically you normally want to have drum programs set to POLY... so that a hi-hat won't mute the snare or kick whatever...

and when i say make a PROGRAM MONO or POLY... i'm not talking about the individual pad setting... just leave that sh!t alone... set the PROGRAM itself to either mono or poly... NOT EACH PAD.

if you make the entire 808 program MONO, each pad will mute each other within that program. i don't see why you would want that with drums... but that's how to do it.

Oh word, the way I set it up is probably wrong then.
I'm having on track 1 my sample chops (violins) that I don't want overlapped.
On track 2 to 5 is my individual drum sounds, so i guess they can overlap since they are short percussive sounds anyway.
And on track 6, I have my 808 notes (3 different notes on 3 different pads), which I don't want overlapped of course.
So all of these pads where I wanted monophony are individually set to mono.

But ALL of these tracks are on the same program, which is set to Poly. Is that wrong?

dude... don't put everything on a single program. of course that's the problem.

one program for your drums... make that poly...

another program for your chopped violin sample... make it mono if you want each pad to cancel each other or poly if you wan't them to play on top of each other.

another program for your 808 sounds... etc

each sample should be chopped into it's own program... no wonder you got stuff cutting eachother off... at least you're using separate tracks though...

Really.. there is no difference between having 4 tracks each with it's own program, and all that **** on 1 track with one program^^^ as long you manage mute groups, and pad voice overalap.

yeah.. no difference as long as you're willing to spend time learning, configuring, and pulling out your hair wondering why something is or isn't muting properly... all rather than just creating a new separate program which takes seconds.

i also tend to apply changes in pitch/filter/etc to the entire program as well [a great feature JJOS allows]... whereas if you have everything in a single program you'll have to adjust each pad one by one. not practical at all.

believe me, it's much more convenient to have separate programs for each set of samples. but to each his own i guess...

 I didn't said I do it... I got separate programs and often few tracks for one program (easier copying and q-links) I just pointed that is NOT a reason why his tracks cut off. There are few "styles" how somebody wants to play. If he wants banging drums and chops and 808's at the same time.. I don't see a problem. Beside I'm on xl2os
