Sorry if this question seems obvious, but I'm new to the world of MPCs and MIDI and want to make sure I make the right choice...

What I would like to do is send MIDI on two different channels, one to clock an arpeggiator on a keyboard and the other one to launch long samples on an SP-404. I know the MPC1000 has 2x MIDI output so this should be possible, but from what I read in the MPC500 manual it's possible to send MIDI out on multiple channels at once (!?). I would then just have to set up a pattern sending on one channel for the 404, and send the clock info on another channel for the keyboard, and use a MIDI splitter cable.

Is that right? I know the MPC1000 looks much better, but I'm mostly looking for the sequencer capabilities as I edit samples on the computer. The 500 is also quite a bit cheaper and easier to find!

so now you've read from 2 different sources (manual and mpc-tutors site) that it's possible. I'd trust those sources more than any response here ;-) :lol:

But to sum up:
* Each midi OUT port is able to SEND midi data on 16 different channels
* Each midi IN port is able to RECEIVE midi data on 16 different channels

the MPC 500 is capable of receiving midi only on the active track, but is able to send events recorded to the sequencer on multiple channels using different MIDI tracks.

Yes, it is possible. If at least one of the devices in question have MIDI Thru, you can just use that instead of a splitter.

MIDI IN - can receive MIDI data (input)
MIDI OUT - for creating and sending data (output)
MIDI THRU - receives and passes the data along to next device. (input and pass through to next input)

Each port has 16 channels to play with. As long as the master device has the channels set to output two different signals, and the receiving devices are set to listen to the appropriate channel containing the data meant for that device, it doesn't matter if you use a splitter or a Thru port.
