Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By The_other_rza Thu Jan 09, 2014 12:24 am
Hey all... new to the forum and this has probably been brought up a few million times but not sure what the latest update is on this pain in the ass... I need a new screen for my MPC2000XL and can't find them ANYWHERE!!! A few sites say they're working on a new product which should be released soon but that was like a year ago and I can't find anything more up to date... can anyone help me track one down?

cheers in advance

No word yet from the designer. So I have a feeling it's gonna be a while. The only thing you can do is find an old unit for parts or someone selling a good screen on ebay. They're not easy to find.

Currently no new MPC2000XL screens, the guy working on them has gone quiet.

Option is to find someone selling one on ebay, for example there was one on Ebay UK that just sold for (potentially) silly money (no idea what he actually accepted in the end, but going rate is around £75, so £180 was ridiculous):

Or look for a 'not working/spares' MPC2000XL, or finally look for an Akai DPS12 screen as the screens are one and the same.

cheers guys... yeh those were the options I've been stuck with for a while and was really hoping someone had pulled their finger out in the meantime... I've even been considering contacting a chinese LCD manufacturer and getting them to make some for me so I can meet the demand... Not liking the whole 'used MPC' approach as an option cuz the screen probably has limited life in it even if it looks good at the moment and buying a new DPS12 just for the screen seems like a waste of money and machinery as I'd never use the DPS... might have to get in touch with China after all

Good luck. And I'm not being sarcastic or anything at all.

I've read too many posts saying someone was going to try and tackle it. Not as easy as it would seem sadly.

Same thing that's been said to everyone else who's made that statement, you would make some good money, and go down in history.

I thought I read here somewhere, that the MPC2000XL LCD was custom made for Akai, and therefore not going to be available as an off the shelf item.

If it was, would Envision have gone to the trouble they did with their replacement LCDs?...

Thanks a lot! (not sarcastic either ;)

I'm in discussion with a few manufacturers at present so I think it will come down to unit cost and minimum order quantities... I'm happy to invest a bit in it because I know there's an un-met demand but there's still a limit... fingers crossed!

Yeh it is a custom item but I would expect someone to get it made elsewhere so it could be made as an off the shelf item... it's stupid Akai didn't get more produced to sell off shelf as it seems like almost an inevitable outcome with the 2000's and XL's. My screen is so **** I can't even tell what page I'm on or what's highlighted...

I would have thought the best way would be to create some sort of interface board, that modified the MPC2000/XL LCD output signal, and translated it to work with a cheap off the shelf Chinese display that is made to work with a more generic LCD controller chip.

I am skeptical that you will get something together, but would be impressed, and grateful, if you did, so feel free to use my skepticism, and that which you will no doubt receive from others, to spur you on.

What was the deal with the Envision V.1 LCD's? It was a lag issue or something? Is that why they scrapped it?

And RZA, I'm not discouraging you =) I'm in your corner on this one. Because if everyone has the attitude of give up before you try, there would never be progress in the world.

I remember they were talking about the V.2's and a VGA out but went silent ever since.

Who knows. Maybe some ambitious kid out there will actually end up cracking DaMPCvinchi Code and get a working LCD replacement. That, is why I won't discourage. No matter how skeptical one may be.

Everyone visiting the 2000XL section on here, I'm nearly positive feels your pain. The worst thought is the thought of giving up, or that some day, there will never be a working 2000XL in existence. 20-30 years down the road maybe?

I'm so glad I didn't sound like I was being a jerk, I kinda felt like it would sound as some internet-know-it-all put others down steez.

Best to ya :) and welcome to the forum.

Wonder.. If anyone has just tried to re-glue the pins if they've lifted...

Is it pins lifting, or some sort of conductive rubber strip from the PCB to the glass that loses contact/conductivity?...

All good star... I was actually expecting everyone to say "shut the **** up! This has been brought up too many times... there's no hope so give up!" Constructive criticism works for me!

haha... yeh you're probably right, it's not going to be easy! A replacement interface that connected to the MPC and even converted and sent the signal to a monitor doesn't seem too far fetched and would be totally kick ass but I am certainly not intellectually endowed enough to figure that out myself, and **** if I'm sending my whole MPC to China for them to figure it out... I'm going to send them my **** screen and see what they can do for me.

Need to reverse engineer the communication protocol between the MPC and the LCD, then program something like an Arduino microcontroller to translate that LCD bitmap onto a more standard LCD communication protocol.

you know its not a bad idea ....it looked like envision was able to decipher what was coming off the board, so what could happen if we just forgot about the compatibility / screen size / etc and went straight external?

envision if yer still around - open source or share with someone

the v1 boards had some lag and the screen size was not perfect, there was like 2 lines of pixels missing from one side.

also i think some of them would lose all responsiveness or something eventually. i think they did a 1.5 version or something, but yea sadly not much came from it.

i'd recommend reading the threads...even some classic cornballery to keep it interesting
