Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

Right so I just got a 2kxl and am trying to figure something out. i have consulted the manual etc.. but don't seem to be having any luck with this particular issue.

I am trying to figure out whether my internal floppy drive is faulty or not. It could be the particular floppies that I am using but logically I don't see why that would be the case. I place a blank floppy(Verbatim 2hd) in the floppy drive, I then go to the Load page and press format. It seems to go through the formatting process as normal but when i go back to the load page and look at the TYPE= it displays question marks instead of displaying MPC2000xl. ( I have tried multiple floppies from the same pack)

So it doesn't seem to be formatting properly but I am getting no error messages. The weird thing is that the drive sounds like it is working, even the light on the drive lights up when formatting etc...

I am going to buy a zip drive soon but would like to know whether or not the floppy drive is bust. Any help or advice on this issue would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

well you did a format which often isn't even necessary... you need to try and save something so go to the sample screen and make a blank sample (just record nothing) and then add it to a program.. then record a sequence real quick.. just push record and hit a pad..

now go to the save screen of the disk menu and save all sequences and songs, as well as all programs and sounds... now turn off and on the mpc... see if it finds it.

last but not least... stay away from zip drives. those will only cause you agony and data loss... go the much cheaper route and get a CF adapter.

Hey man, thanks alot for the quick response. I tried that just now but when I turn the mpc off and on again it starts up and says it's detecting memory but when I go to find the file it's not there.

I've been trying to be positive about the floppy drive but now I think it's probably faulty.

Thanks for the advice on the CF Adaptor btw. are there any particularly decent ones/brands/specs I should go for?

One other thing to try is to make sure that lock thing isn't switched on the floppy disk.. there is a hole that has a slider on it.. make sure it is blocking the hole. I don't know what the mpc does when that is switched open because I never tried it but check in case.

for the cf adapter.. there are so many types and brands... in the 2000xl section you will see some big threads about them. mostly the brand of the cf card matters...
