You can download updates from their website, anyone can do that, the MPC doesn't have to be registered to you.
You will probably find that you will not be able to install and run the updates, without connecting an MPC controller to your computer when it asks you to.

No, they only have to contact Akai if that MPC has been used with 4 software installations previously.
If it hasn't been used with 4 software installations, it will authorise the installation automatically over the internet, and subtract 1 from the installation count.
Once the installation count reaches 4, they just need to contact Akai and ask them to reset the count.
I think you are confused, about the installation authorisation process, and how that is not really related to registering it.
