I have an MPC 3000, and am considering getting an S1000 while they're reasonably priced. I've started reading the manual, but i was wondering if someone had some bullet points of the biggest functional differences between the S1000 sampler and 3K sampler? Not so much concerned with sonics, as much was what can be done with samples (loops, key groups, etc)

IMO you already stated the biggest difference: keygroups

While on MPCs (exclude the 4000 and 1000,2500 with JJOS) you create programs by asssigning a sample to a PAD (therefore to ONE note number) you will assign a sample to a KEYGROUP on a racksampler like the s1000 which is not only 1 note number but a range of keys that you can choose (for example: Sample 1 = C1 to C2)

With that in mind its really easy to layer sounds. You just have to place them in the same keyrange. So if Sample 2 = C1 to C2 also you will hear both samples when you play these notes.

Since the racksamplers were mainly made to play instruments they are easier to handle when it comes to chromatic playing a sample. On a MPC you need to "sacrifice" in order to play a sample chromaticly or you use the 16Level function.

Right, thanks for that. And I also read about loops, which also seem to be a big deal.
Is there anything else I'm missing that's different?

I use an S1000 with my MPC3000.

The S1000 can be used for looping samples for tails and creating synths that sustain whilst you hold a key/pad. Also, I use the multi-loop points to create glitchy loops for a bit o' glitch funk stutter bizniss.

It much easier to play samples across the entire keyboard range.

There are a lot more modulation options, including Pan Mod and Pitch Mod.

You can spread multiple samples across the stereo image exactly as you wish with the key groups.
'Velocity to Sample Start' is great for stereo widening when you apply different values to different samples with different panning.

I constantly use it for resampling. e.g. If I have a badass stab coming from my MPC3000, distorted through a mixing desk channel, with a touch of reverb and a big slap of stereo delay... I'll sample that into my S1000 and then sample it back into the MPC3000.
Sampling hot into the S1000 can sound good, especially on drums... it can clip nicely.. but you don't want to hear about how good the S1000 sounds right? :lol:
Well, lemmie just say... the S1000 sounds better than the MPC3000! Crispy with better high-end, sounds brilliant and when pitching down.... and more. It does lack a good filter though.
You really can overdrive those sounds and it sounds good in the S1000. Also, join one sample on top of itself, boost the loudness for a big, hefty, good-sounding volume increase.

Time-stretching sounds proppa old school good.

With a scsi drive connected (i got a scsi CF reader/writer in the floppy bay on mine) it's so easy to scroll through and organise all your partitioned samples with the screen and disk menu.
Also, I can take the CF card out of my S1000 and put it into my MPC3000 CF reader and the MPC3000 will read the S1000 CF card!
I don't do that often though because I always prefer to sample instead of transfer... but it's an option. The MPC also reads S1000 floppies.

You can also use it to verify any floppy disk you have because it tells you if it finds any bad blocks on a format. (I have both a CF reader and the floppy drive fitted for this purpose).

I got the DIGI card in the S1000 which enables you to backup, through S/PDIF (TS - phono cable), into your computer. You can also sample into this digi card through a 44100Hz or 48000Hz digital signal.

Again--> it sounds fantastic.

Good info jimmie.

Apparently the S3000XL is also a good partner for the MPC3000. Pretty much for the same reasons jimmie outlined previously about the S1000.

The S3000 EQ (offline) can be quite useful as can the EB16 if fitted. Anything saved on floppies and SCSI drives should be interchangeable between the two machines. Useful to know if you don't have the rack space for an S1000 and S3000XL's are dirt cheap too.
