Talking about Roland....I quote myself:
This is an 8min sounddemo of the Roland S10 keyboard sampler.
The focus here is on the inputstage and converter since it seems that the s10 has a real "thru the converter" monitor (while many other samplers monitor directly after the rec gain knob for example).
The benefit is that you don't need to sample into the machine but just run the signal thru it in real time to get coloaration of the ampstage and the converter. IDK for sure about this so anyone who has insight in the shematics: please leave a message :).
This demo is made because someone on gearslutz ask what I know about the topic.

The input stage of the S10 has 3 different gain settings on the back of the machine (lo,mid,hi) and also a rec level fader on the front. You can directly plug a microphone in to sample. It seem that it has a limiter before the converter so the sound won't get digital clipping but will be limited and then get analog distortion.

The samplerate on this sampler can be set to either 15kHz or 30kHz. And as soon as the rec menu is selected you can hear the input signal and the change in sound while switching betweeen the two samplerates.

In this demo I played around a lot with switching between samplerates and rec gain.

To be able to A/B the signals I recorded the original signal on the hard left while the right side is the signal that came from the S10 (of course, in real time). You can either use 2 mono channels on a mixer to A/B this
or load the file into your DAW/AudioEditor, split it and A/B it from there.
You shouldn't listen to both sides on the same time cause this won't show you really whats goin on and the levels are sometimes very different (caused by the rec gain fader)

have fun!

One other thing I really love about the S10 is the way it handles loops. You set a fixed looplength (lets say exactly 1 bar) and now be able to go thru the whole sample "searchin" for loops you would hardly find with another method.

Bad thing about it: no doubt: quickdisk and only 4 samples to use.

I also had the W30. The display on this had a really loud tone that drove me crazy so I sold it before really get into the machine. I regret that. Sould have simply change the display.

peace

Sellers dont give a shit about 'most people', they target people who can afford to pay. It's a waiting game. Most people still think (or hope) they will pick up an SP1200 for cheap. Prices don't drop as time goes by, they increase gradually. If you want an SP1200, the sooner you get one, the better.

There are different types of sellers, those who do not want to sell quickly, and want to sell at maximum value, who are pushing the prices up, and those who need the money, so sell at more reasonable prices to get money quickly.

You can still pick up SP1200s for $1.5k, if you are willing to wait long enough, and are ready to buy when they become available.

These days when I think of spending 2 g s on an sp, I think of that interview where pete rock talks about going feom the sp to the mpc 2000 and him breathing a sigh of relief. Now it was an akai promo interview so im sure lots of hype and propaganda but still.
I want an sp but damn! !!

Pete Rock should consider switching back to the SP because a lot of his recent stuff has been shite.

I wouldn't say his newer stuff sounds really bad, but it doesn't really excite me either. Pretty much the only Pete Rock produced album i can listen to again and again and never get bored is INI - Center of Attention, and that was done on the SP... gotta bite the bullet someday and get that on vinyl... over 100 bucks on discogs....

It's true; his sound has gotten thinner. Had to Google and watch / listen to that video, and you're right.
It may also be because of the person doing mixing / mastering but you never know.
Also the vocal is kind of loud compared to the beat, unlike in the 90s.
