Just bought an mpc 60 & noticed it was making weird noises at the end of samples. I sampled a short kik using 4.9 secs. So after .3 secs it makes very loud scratchy random noises (not clicks or pops). Since the kick is very short the noise can be edited out.

I opened the unit and saw how the memory chips have been hack soldered for more memory. I'm kinda pissed because I broke one of my voice chips trying to diagnose the problem in the process. I don't feel like spending a ton of cash visiting Bruce Forat. Thoughts?

PS
I have 3 total mpc 60's. 2 of them are projects.

well that sounds like the way it used to get done back when that expansion was extremely expensive. I think maybe you could think of having the piggy backed chips removed (with the solder cleaned off) and look into getting a proper expansion board.

Might be kinda tuff to do it myself. Looks like the chips have been also soldered into the board (as well as daisy chain hacked).

well i wouldn't suggest you do it on your own if you never done it before... maybe you know someone who has the gear and the knowledge... check youtube for solder sucking and cleaning.. you will see what needs to be done.

Ok, Forat removed those memory chips & soldered in new memory. Got rid of that hack job. I heard that those mods were done because in 1993 they stopped selling the expansion.

I believe that is quite possible and would fit the theme I have seen... I think around then (maybe in 92) when they were selling the mpc60ii.. it looks like they had a lot that they sold bundled with the ram expansion.... as a matter of fact, I don't think I have ever heard of someone with the 60ii who didn't get it with the ram expansion.
