I agree, the 7" screen gets quite fiddly to use, although IMO a lot of that is purely down to poor design choices from Akai, i.e. tiny on-screen buttons etc.
IMO it would make sense for Akai to hire an organisation which specialises in designing touchscreen interfaces to create the touch UI who can also run proper, controlled usability tests.
The last few years I've been thinking they should hire a lot of ppl.
E.g., some serious beatmakers in their team that'd shoot some serious feedback and criticism to Akai who'd then adjust the product that way. I'm talking about some serious beatmakers; not people who work on a beat two hours on Sundays.
When the Ren came out, I was shaking my head at how it could come out in such immature state, missing many essential features, with so many bugs etc. Couldn't help thinking, if they had had people who can get serious with making songs, they would've pointed those out ages ago. PDC being one thing.
And with the Touch, I can't help feeling, did they ask any previous heavy MPC users about the design? There would've been a lot of people saying you can't take away the << < > >> buttons, for example.
Marketing team would be another thing. Remember the vides before the Ren? Premier, Pete Rock – not using the Ren. Alchemist hanging by the beach with the Studio – not using it.
Etc.
I'm in a team for another company doing just that (unpaid work because I love the company and their products), and I'm always as ruthlessly honest as I can, and the feedback for improving the products comes from heavy everyday use. And they do listen and adjust.
