Sample preview sounds different from pad/sequencer

So I noticed that when I load up one of the drum kits, the preview of the samples (the waveform next to the filename and in the "edit sample" window) sounds different from when I hit the pad with the same sample assigned. This includes if I'm in draw mode and use my mouse instead of hitting the pads. The preview of the sample sounds much more rich, while the sample on the pad and sequnce list sounds very flat and muted. (Not literally muted, it isn't a volume issue.) Cymbals especially sound more distant and tinny.

I believe that when you preview a file in the browser or in sample edit mode, the sample sound is directed directly to the output of your soundcard with full velocity.

But when you play it trough your pads the sound has to go trough a few things that you've set up. Things like:

*Grid (Velocity);
*Program (Master volume, Mono/Poly, Samples level etc);
*Maybe even trough a submix.

All of the above things before reaching the output of your soundcard.

Ok, thank you. What I don't understand is where along the line could this be occuring? Say it's a new project and I haven't messed with mix settings and it's at full velocity. What would cause the change to be so drastic?
