Is sample management any easier with the MPC software than trying to work it on the machine?
Yes, but it's not really a function of the MPC, but you, the operator. Typically, what I do, is to keep a folder for each MPC Program. That way, I know what samples goes with it, and you could create a new folder, re-store (after purge) in the new folder, delete the old folder and rename the new folder again. Cumbersome when the UI doesn't provide a reasonable flow of taps or button pushing. Reasonable of course depends on how much you organize around. Some overdo, and some not so much.
One reason it is a complex situation is because the MPC wouldn't know if you want to keep the excess samples on the storage media or if it is used in some other program (it could search, but every time?), AND (this is a big one), I wouldn't want someone else, or some buggy software, make "logical" (to someone else) decisions on how I want or not to store, or what to keep/discard, etc. for me, or do other random "things" ("cleanup"). I want to make such decisions myself.
Even bigger software vendors have tried and ultimately ended up with keeping track of libraries on the side. I've used two or three different computer software and although it may work while using a single software, I always come back to my own way. One rarely fits all.
