So here we are.

The bogeyman thing is surely they’ve had a historical rep for knock offs and iffy builds. Some say they had no issues and whatever they bought performed and held up fine for the cost. Then the cloning of out of copyright circuits, full designs and even cosmetic styles and panel livery just set off the people who have already hated Behringers for 10-20 years.

And I’d add to that you might notice an odd pattern in the most vehement anti Uli folks. They seem to have have zero issue with indie and tiny firms cloning Moog, Roland, OB and ARP. If it’s something like AJH Moog clones (or Moon or dot com in 500 format clones) in euro rack there’s not a peep of dissent.
Then they shift it to well it’s not the cloning itself it’s that it’s a multi billion dollar interest doing it, so = evil, case closed in their minds.

The recent TD-3 black or whatever name ascribed, that situation gets more grey and blurry. Behringer was in talks with the DevilFish mod creator to pay for his design and just spit out the boards at levels of production previously unimaginable. They offered him a fraction of a percentage point, he said no, they said whatever we will just do it anyway.

So that detour is I think a bit more valid a debate to have or take issue with. In the other cases he’s cloning things that are out of copyright that were owned by firms who mostly refused to ever reissue under any circumstance. Of course excepting the Korg and ARP reissues. But even those are made with David Friend from ARP as a consultant and sharing on the profits. It’s not due to the fact Mr. Friend owns the designs, they are out of copyright.

And as crazy as it seems the 50 number is pretty real once you start adding up all the leaks, trolling with a smile suggestions in their online marketing like IG and saying open ended suggestive things on forums, posed as ‘what would you think if...’ queries.

I hope they do more originals as it’s just more variety and the Neutron is a great piece of kit. I feel like some of the questions people raise are valid, but I don’t feel it’s quite the black and white all good/all evil dichotomy so many are framing it as in a monolithic way.

The Devilfish guy and his wife played themselves. A major brand like Behringer offers you a royalty which increases per sales volume on your non-patented modification of a product which paten ran out over a decade ago and you F u c king pass on the deal, and now want to cry over your arrogance and outright stupidity?

Devilfish got what they f u c king deserved...

now that's not a criticism -- contrary, to what some may say, there's nothing wrong with being a biter. but just don't pretend that it's anything else other than biting.

as for the claim roland doesn't re-release stuff and give what the people want -- that's ****. roland have -- and continue to -- re-release their signature drum sets and synths in so, so many different iterations over the years, starting with the r8 in 1989. all those roland groove boxes come with 808, 909, 606 etc sounds. all the JVs have those sound cards with all the classic drum machines and synths on them. roland's flagship workstations have always been full of 808s, 909s and roland vintage synths. roland continue today with the aria system and the released sh101, d50 808, 909, 303, juno, jx etc.

i can understand that a 16 yo may not have had a chance to buy a pro one or an 808 or CR. but for any grown person. what's your excuse? these machines have been around for 30-40 years. and for most of that time you could buy them for a couple of hundred bucks. if you're a 40 year old without a pro one or an 808, then you need to have a hard look at yourself and not blame roland or sequential circuits for poor gear digging skills.

People want the real analog instruments from Roland, not the digital versions with Analog Circuit Behavior. I have Roland Cloud which has the ACB technology in their plugins and although they sound good, they area not what they should be. I still use my hardware analog preamps and filters to warm them up when printing my stems, but I also own several Behringer analog synths which blends in very well with my virtual versions...

Uli Behringer tackles 'the haters' head-on

Controversial synth mastermind issues strident statement

Uli Behringer, founder of controversial synth and audio firm Behringer, has taken to social media to issue a strident defense of the company's vision, strategy and what he considers to be its "two obligations - to relentlessly deliver what customers desire and to observe the law."

The Facebook statement, addressed to 'some of the "haters"', tackles a number of issues head-on, and it seems Uli is tired of the endless controversy surrounding the firm's releases. Primarily, he comes out swinging on cloning classic synths and undercutting competitors.

Technology is free for everyone to use unless it’s protected.

Uli Behringer
"There is not one magazine, forum or thread where we don't get criticized or even attacked," the statement reads. "We understand that not everyone likes us or me and that's perfectly fine.

"However, we also see constructive criticism which we truly welcome as it's a great opportunity for us to learn and improve,

"In our Vision, we only have two obligations - to relentlessly deliver what customers desire and to observe the law. We will always respect that people may have different opinions about what we should and shouldn’t do, however, that’s not an area we will ever engage in.

"Technology is free for everyone to use unless it’s protected. That’s exactly the reason why the law was designed the way it is, so it encourages competition - all for the benefit of you the customers and for society to progress.

"We also understand that we’re controversial and we’re perfectly fine with it as we continue to relentlessly push the envelope, while also challenging our competitors to deliver better quality and lower prices.

"Recently we see more and more competitors join us in our mission and we welcome everyone who believes in our Vision. We're happy to collaborate with and also acquire businesses.

"We’re immensely grateful for all the support we have been receiving over the past 30 years and hence our complete loyalty belongs to our customers.

We call it Customer Obsession. That’s why our team and I are here and listen to our customers.”

LOL!

Uli Behringer pretty much just let the customer know that he's on our side first and foremost, and put the competition on notice by telling Moog, Roland, InMusic, and Korg that he can buy their lives with his F u c k you money.

You gotta love it...

I don't see it that way... he is making generic medication once patents and legal stuff expires or allows him to... nothing new in the corporate world. I think korg is the only real "**** you" I have really seen... since they are releasing stuff currently on the market by korg.

It is great for the consumer to get cheaper prices. Companies all over the music industry are trying to get in the below $1000 market to attract a new generation of customers, and to fit in to a customer base that didn't need to exist 20 years ago (it was high prices or nothing) ... look at SSL with the 2 and the 2+ ... they never gave a shit about that demographic before. Look at the stuff you can get from motu these days for the price... it is a 1/3 of the price for similar specs compared to 10-15 years ago.

and apparently the behringer interfaces are not total trash.. in some categories they look better than the steinberg ones.

Uli is just making what people want, plain and simple. The demand is there, and its eating up his supply like candy. Folks are too attached to brand name's that don't give a shit about us in the first place. If its not Roland that puts it out, it must be BAAAAD, even though Roland isn't making what a big chunk of its crowd have been asking for since the 90s. I mean the dude that designed the MS-10 and 20 works for Behringer now. And Mr. ARP himself pitched in on B's Odyssey and 2600. I bet 90% of the people who are looking at one didn't even know The Wasp existed until Behringer put one out. Same with the Cat. Ill sell somebody my SH-101 for $1500 (its got the mod grip even for maximum DEVO) and replace it with an MS-1 and a Pro 1 (hmm maybe a K2) and go smoke the rest. I don't see how this could be anything but good for those of us that like to dabble in sound and still eat and pay rent. Can you even find a Wasp that hasn't fallen apart or blown up yet? Ive been looking for one for like 15+ years now. The Behringer's filter isn't quite there but its close enough and I have a Wasp VCF already so now I can finally have the whole thing for about tree fiddy!

I have the K-2 and the MS-20 Mini and they sound so close to each other that I'm very comfortable with letting go of my Korg which is a great disappointment in the MIDI department. 1 Channel Korg? Like seriously, 1 f u c king channel????

I forgot who said they couldn’t find any evidence of Uli Behringer being a musician, well, without looking, a video of Uli playing with the legendary Lee Ritenour popped up on YouTube...
