I didn't know that. Maybe i just didn't want to know.

Reminds of this track from kanye and rhymefest called ''brand new''. At a certain moment rhymefest said something like '' on my brand new dick ''. It always braincracked me on how that worked. a brand new dick. You go to polish it off or something?

Aw geez.. me and my offtopic talk always.

1200, MPC 3000, or TR 808.

Time will tell, but I don't see the Isla 2400 competing directly with the MPC X either... sure maybe some people make the transition, but what do I know. I had been keen on it, but have subsequently cooled down... I don't need more of "that sound" gear, I just need something consistent and reliable.

I am with you though... while I get SPLICE, I am meh on it... Ableton Link, while well implemented goes against my interest in standalone, and the plugins are there, but not something I really go to. I have accepted I am not the target audience for most of Akai's MPC updates at this time.

Personally, I will be keeping an eye out on the Live mk2, if it is basically a Live with a speaker, hand rest, and CV outs... I'm going to be pretty uninterested, on the other hand they absolutely could increase internal storage, add more memory and a faster cpu that is backwards compatible, and setup for a possible mk2 line up into the future... they'll at least have grabbed my attention in a way that they don't have right now.

But... I am not the target audience right now :D

Feature set and workflow they are different, but they're competing for the same creative userbase. Why release the MPC ONE, LIVE, FORCE, and X. When they could've just released the X and put all the R&D into that machine.

I guess they didn't pay attention to Gibson and Fender.

Just think about it, people are buying the SP 1200 for $3000+, the MPC 3000 for 2500+, The Roland TR 808 for $3000+ for a number of years. This was the time for MPC to drop a monster and reconnect to the people. But they chose, SPLICE, ABLETON LINK, Battery, and Tier 2 Plug ins.

I like that they are adding more synths all seems like there is some duplication among the synths being added for example looks like two FM synths.

But if the first three VI's are anything to go buy these might well be filler; I agree with the idea of being able to choose what is installed and being able to uninstall plugins and factory content that is not needed.

I would defo rather other companies develop vst's for Akai

They're after Low hanging fruit and it obvious by how they market it. As far as numbers, I look at it like this. If the numbers were incredible, it would appear in the marketing. "100K Units Sold." The ISLA S2400 is going to switch lots of the MPC core audience over, not just because of the features and nostalgia. But because it appeals to the culture.

No marketing tricks, people get to see it coming together, honest interaction with the user. They treat the end-user as contemporaries and not fast food customers. There are lots of producer, who can't wait to get their hands on it. Plus everyone will have the same exact machine, so it's easier for everyone to be on the same page.

Yeah, the software is not up to par, but folks enjoy standalone. I've always been hybrid, but I almost always start with just the Live. The VIs play a major role in that.

If the 2400 had 16 pads, and I didn't own a Live, I'd be interested too. More buttons, faders... generally good tactile control. I'd miss the extras though. Maybe I'd get more into chopping.

A lot of folks were waiting on the Live & X too.

I'm with you on Splice & Ableton Link, but that's because I don't use them, apparently like you don't use the battery and VIs. But the folks that do use them are connected with.

But please help me understand why you use the Live instead of one of the classics. The 4K especially sounds like what you wish the new MPCs were.

I had the X and LIve but returned them and much much later picked up the MPC One because I received an incredible price break. Ended up costing $350  My main machine is two MPC 4000's

I agree Enoch. Why it can't be the whole studio.
If dudes githeir entire stoo on a laptop you should be able to do it with the Live, definitely with the X.
If Akai would of did their due diligence we could. ITS NOT IMPOSSIBLE! I hope someone say no it can't so l can give them that smoke :smoker:

I got the Live over a 4k for two reasons. 1. There weren't very many around at the time in December, and the ones that were, were more than a brand new Live was (and none of them had an output expansion in it). 2. I got a brand new GC credit card that had just enough of a limit for a Live.
The Live is rad though, Im getting what I need to do done with it just fine and then some, the 4K would've been just the same without the fancy screen, and less effects (and MORE outputs!!). Probably some maintenance before we could really rock. I really cant complain, but knowing what was in the 4k as far as the Z engine goes.. Ive got two Emu Ultras sitting next to my MPC and man that thing looks sad compared to those old ass 1999-era dinosaurs. If I could do more with the sampler in the MPC, I could easily go down to 99% of my sample work being done by the Live. The sequencer part is 100% A-OK with me, except for the stupid fidgety touch screen in the grid editor. If it had a sampler worth a shit, man it would be THE beast.

@danoc- it “fell” off a truck. Don’t let Charles tell you otherwise.

As someone who is part of the “target market”, more hobbyist/ amateur, I’m rather in different to all this. If the stuff is cool and I use it great, but to be honest it had my needs covered when I got it in May of 2017. It would be nice to see other people get the features they want and the extra goodies but in all it makes very little difference to me.

So perhaps Charles and them are right, they could be allocating the resources better. I highly doubt anyone is making a decision to pull the trigger because now it has splice or ableton link or even more plugins/effects.

I will say they are in uncharted territory when it comes to a product like this. Essentially they are seeing what will stick. I will give them some credit, but some things seem a bit ridiculous. Speakers and arm rests... come on

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with wanting the MPC to be the studio. However, I do think there’s something wrong with Akai’s focus on Splice, Ableton Link and plugin instruments when you still can’t do basic things - editing, song arrangement, time signature changes, etc. that you can do in any DAW with ease. Try to edit midi notes so they sit in a pocket around a vocalist, set a time signature, record and edit vocals, and you’ll quickly see that no matter how many plugins they add, this thing isn’t going to be the center of a studio without a major overhaul of the hardware and software, just to be able to the things that a studio centerpiece should be able to do.

Some cheer because of the shiny stuff being built on top of the foundation, while others scream because the foundation isn’t done yet. The last what? 5 or 6 updates? None of them have been fixing the foundation. Many of us come from the MPC era where the foundation was TIGHT (2000, 4000), not to mention the Z platform sampler... and people’s expectations (and frustrations) are a reflection of that. It’s not that people don’t want the platform to evolve. It’s that new stuff is being built on a foundation that needs attention, just to be able to do basic things, and instead we’re getting splice, clip launching, ableton link and a speaker. But hey I get it. Times change. It is what it is.
