Sure. The worst thing that could happen is that you upgrade, open a project, save it, rollback and find out the project does not open anymore and also cannot go forward to the latest version again for some reason. For starters I don't expect that on patch level upgrades (but you never know) and that's also the reason you want to backup a lot. I might be a bit paranoid but I do automatic backups of my SSD when I start controller mode regularly and depending on the "I cannot loose this project"-rating of a project I save to SSD first and then a backup copy to an SD-Card as well. Easy enough and saves a lot of trouble

Yes you're absolutely right, once you save a project in a newer version it might no longer work in an older version. However the last time this was a huge issue was back in 2.1 (or maybe 2.3?) when they completely overhauled the project file structure.

Since then I think the worse that can happen if that your project or programs might be referencing non-existent FX or other features. For example, opening a 2.11 project in 2.10 works fine, except they have changed the name of 'master compressor' to 'buss compressor', so 2.10 doesn't recognise it and just leaves that FX slot blank. Or of course you'll have issues if you use something like Air Flavor or Fabric etc. I jump back and forth quite a bit, as I'm still making sure my expansions work in 2.10 (lots of people refusing to move to 2.11).

I find no harm in updating ever. It's not really possible to brick the MPC from what I've seen. That said, I'm not out performing with it, and none of my projects are my livelihood or anything. Glad to see OP-x4 is getting some love since I finally bought that one.

I bought a used Live mk1 last spring (first mpc), and i'm new to the scene. I love poking around with drum samples, instruments and sequences. I hope Akai can get the firmware up to standard, remove the glitches and make the MPC a wholesome platform again.

Immediately there's an issue with this new firmware.

Non-Akai expansions and XPM files now need an accompanying SEQ file in order to play audio previews. The MPC in standalone mode will not audition MP3 files of any kind using the browser.

MP3s can no longer be auditioned or even used in standalone. I tried to load some into the Sample Editor and they won't load at all.

So fixed some of the Splice samples that weren't working but now messed up MP3s.

The SEQ file thing was a false alarm, it was actually the mp3 propblem that was causing it.

MP3 file are no longer supported, not just standalone, but in the MPC Software as well. Not just as previews, as actual loadable files, so if you use mp3 you'll have to convert them to wavs before you can use them in your MPC. However I assume this has to be a bug, probably related to the work they've been doing with Splice issues.

If changing the Splice code broke the MP3 functionality, then their codebase must be a horrific mass of spaghetti. If they did not catch this problem prior to the release then they are not testing things adequately prior to release.

People keep asking for a public beta, I would argue that these effectively are public betas. Anyone updating their firmware on release day must now know they are risking these issues.

IMO, roll out a proper public beta programme - check a box in the 'preferences' page that enrolls you to receive the public betas automatically via the online updates.

One of the worst bug fix release in recent memory... how can this go unnoticed.. auto release I can understand for and update but for a bugfix disgraceful..

Imagine that ... I so hope that disabling mp3 files is a bug and nothing intentional. You never know

Right Now....2.11.4 is as good as it can get. There's a few Workarounds but its pretty much stable. When 2.11.6 drops, then 2.11.7 etc....I'll just Download the USB Image Firmware Files and save them in a folder with the rest of my Firmware Updates, for easy Upgrading/Downgrading.

They Added New Instruments, But Broke Splice. Fixed Splice, But Broke MP3 Support. Now They'll Fix MP3 Support, Then WAV Support wont work. Fix That, Then Sampler Only Works in MONO, etc...

take it easy, a completely new soft will come in a moment along with a very refined DAW MPC3 and all the problems will disappear;)
