The SOC originally came with a 4GB variant, I think that also had twice the CPU as well, while the MPC Key 61 has no such CPU improvement, so perhaps they are getting the board custom built these days.
As a casual observer it does seem crazy to skimp on these aspects given the relatively low costs of jumping up the ram and CPU spec to something pretty juicy, but beyond the economics I'm not sure exactly how simple a job it is to adapt everything to a different spec CPU (or completely different SOC). I've seen people claim it's a PITA so unlikely to happen until they decide to go all in for the 'next generation' hardware, which I don't think these alleged new MPCs are. No idea though, but from the leaks I'm assuming this MPC XL is just the original MPC X with different skin, 4GB ram, ethernet port (and maybe 'clicking' data wheel?) . Ultimately as things stand the MPC Key has more ram than the more expensive and supposed flagship, so that seems to be something they have to address one way or another.
But I'm surprised with all the talk of MPC 3.0 again, I always assumed this wouldn't come until the next generation hardware arrived. But like everyone else, I did see the 'leaked' MPC Software 3 placeholder on their store, so, let's see what happens.
I have never thought about this hmm. You might have to recompile the Kernel if the CPU type is different for that new kernel and depending on how optimized the base and userland are for that CPU you have to recompile that as well…let’s assume they did their homework and have optimized their system enough to squeeze out every last drop of performance. I don’t think they have any code in the MPC app itself to check for the correct CPU type? At least I don’t see any necessity really. But they might compile a heavily optimized version for the SoC (at least that’s what I would do for the same reason I would optimize base and userland … but that’s me). I don’t really think they roll out any base or userland upgrades ever if they don’t have to to minimize problems with changed system libraries and such. So while building the Linux once is doable imho scraping off the MPC app after every release and putting it on the custom Linux might become a nuisance. And if they really build optimized versions then we need the source code and that we won’t get lol

Stands for “System-on-Chip” … meaning that everything or most of the programmable chips are combined into one chip. This has several advantages like better performance or smaller footprint. Apple for example does this with their new M-Chips, too.

The part about the Processor and ram is 15:55 to 17:37
He also found a microSD inside that's not accessible to users.
He did this almost a year ago and later said he found a supplier that had the same one with an upgraded 4gb of ram. (but I believe you have to buy in bulk prices like Alibaba style?
And what do ya know few months later the Keys 61 came out with those exact specs.
Have seen that video. The hardware is very similar to the MPC hardware. At least the SoC is (that board with the heat sink on top). If I still had time in my life for some hacking I would try to get such a board. But life is busy nowadays
