I see a lot of people pairing the MPC with sp404 mk2. Don’t they pretty much do the same thing? Are there any real benefits to having both?

Thank you

The SP404 is more suitable when pairing some of the Older Model MPCs (MPC2000XL, etc) that have Limited Effects

It's kind of like trying to compare a truck to a boat. Sure they both get you from point A to point B, and in some instances you could use one or the other to do it. On the flip side, for the vast majority of ways you'd use them, they are both taking you different places.

I've got both, and while you certainly don't *need* both... you also don't really need multiple instruments, effects, or whatever to make music. As with anything else, use the tools you've got to be as effective and efficient as possible, and the MPC and SP each have their own workflows, pros, and cons... they can play off of each other quite well.

Gives you more Effects

I like the way you describe it. On a more specific note what exactly do they do that makes them different?

YouTube comparisons is the best for this kind of question.

The MPC is far more production focussed. It's got a consistent and pretty deep sequencer and sampling engine. Tons of effects and synths. Midi output powerhouse. It edges towards a DAW in a lot of ways because of all that, but still not quite a DAW. For me, the MPC Live 2 is quite quick, I have a lot of effects to dig as deeply into as I'd like, and if I want to sit down and massage a sample or tweak note placement... it's not too hard and it rewards putting the work in.

The SP on the other hand is really more performance focussed. Very quick to sample, it has 40+ effects that are highly optimized for specific effect controls, and resampling/pattern mode is geared more to just capturing something and moving forward. Skip back feature lets you record the last 40 seconds of whatever is playing, and at an "end of chain" or "mid chain" placement lets you grab those happy accidents and dump them someplace fun/useful.

Sure there's more... you can find pros/cons lists for both, but without spending a lot of time I'd summarize the MPC as having a lot more depth to it, while the SP tends to be a bit more shallow. The MPC rewards putting the time in up front to polish something into what you want, and the SP rewards being "in the moment" and just keep moving forward.

This we perfect. Thank you for putting in the time for the response!
