Is that better on 3?
Any chance we have shareable templates for midi controllers?
I gave it away for now but still use my global template.

Guess theae questions should go dirctly to akai.

Do you mean the launch control. I only use it of synths, and I have a big 3 bank 96 routing to the OPX4 and it's never crashed on me.

I'm still on Version 2 software, so I wonder if they've sorted anything since you got rid of yours.

Im not in my right mind, Im in my left mind. And Trombone was my first instrument. :smoker: I use MPC for orchestral style music all the time, and any additions to the keygroup engine would be very welcome. Thats why I brought up making multi-timbral string patches with different articulations on the Modwheel like Sampletank.

I second that, as I use the MPC for orchestral music also.
The new mixer certainly helps setting levels on an piece with many instruments.

So, it's still impossible to use the built-in speakers (Live 2) and the audio card simultaneously... That's unfortunate.

They're both audio interfaces. You can't do this anywhere aside from making an aggregate device in MacOS as it is. Not sure why this little Linux device would be expected to do something even a full blown Linux environment can't.

Actually it's absolutely possible on Linux to use several inputs and outputs with differents soundcards at the same time with pipewire. I use in my daw a presonus Audiobox for outputs and my Behringer x32 as inputs.

@jalex I'm really excited for the new mixer and track colors. I'm already planning on making a template with Yellow for Brass, Green for Woodwinds, Blue for Strings and Purple for percussion.

Interesting and believe it or not, I was out this morning walking the dog and coming to the same conclusions and I found it quite liberating from all the negative thoughts of having to come up with all these workarounds to accomodate the old ways.

Think of mpc3 as a new product, but one where you have the advantage of already knowing the majority of features already. Don't focus on wotkarounds and fixes, try to think how you would approach this product if there was no previous baggage to deal with.

Imagine you've switched on an MPC and were never aware that previously had the option of changing the program assigned to an existing track. A kit gets loaded to a track and that track is always that kit in all sequences. Makes sense really.

Okay, so how do I completely change up the kit sound halfway through the song? Automation is an option. Or maybe I want a completely different kit - okay, can we somehow program a drum kit change on a track (no we can't), hmmm, so it would just make sense to create a new track and load the new kit to that, we'll just copy over the drum events from track 1 just for this portion of the song.

The thing to remember is that Akai said back in 2019 that implementing disk streaming would require unified tracks. People really wanted disk streaming, they got disk streaming and the new way of structuring project tracks that comes with it.

But I do feel for those that don't want to change, they like their existing workflows. This feels like something they didn't ask for and probably think disk streaming is not worth the trade off. They can stick with mpc2 but never get any more bug fixes or new plugins.

I also agree in general with his takes on song mode and the arranger. The arranger is quite underwleming as even back when the Force got ii, in my head I expected something where you can 'arrange' your song by dragging around blocks of sequences. The arranger is really just a more visual way of viewing your tracks together, with direct links to existing editing options (pop up dialogs, split screen editor).

It's fine but I do think it's overhyped as a feature and once people use it they soon realise it doesn't really add much to any workflow, be it song mode or any of the 'anti-song mode' style workflows (e.g. 'single seq > keep doubling length' or just starting with a really long seq and record a track at a time etc). For example to insert some bars into your sequence via the arranger you still have to open the 'sequence edit' options and use the normal 'insert bars' dialogue.

And yes, I agree, the arranger should be in song mode, drag those seqs around, build your song. And like the MPC5000, drop/record your audio tracks across song mode. Unified tracks and programs ensure it all works nicely together. No need to 'convert song to sequence' because unifed tracks mean this 'song mode-arranger' is already good to go for stem exports.

Marlow with the gutsy honest review. And now he’s officially canceled by Akai

All jokes aside he nailed exactly how I’ve been feeling about this. The arranger view isn’t that impressive enough to ditch the old workflow.

I just don't think the arranger is related to the new vs old workflow, it's just 'sequence view' and a feature they could have implemented in MPC2 as well. The unified tracks thing is what makes mpc3 different in terms of workflow as it's what ties together sequences.

The arranger is currently only associated with a single sequence, so unified tracks doesn't come into it. If they put the arranger in song mode then it would become multi-sequence and thus dependent on mpc3 unified tracks.

Calling it an 'arranger' is really a bit misleading. You can 'arrange' the order of your tracks, but only using the pop up 'track settings' dialogue which is the same one available in main and track view. IMO arrange view should offer visual drag and drop track re-arranging

And when it comes to 'arranging' events and audio, you cannot really do anything directly on the tracks in the arranger. You have to use a small frame at the bottom of the screen that displays grid or audio edit, or use the same 'Sequence Edit'' dialogue boxes as used in main mode.

Yes, and in addition to the existing 'copy pads' dialogue they've also introduced a new 'merge pads' option in MAIN > track edit to copy all the pads from one track to the next available pad bank in another track. There's loads of options beyond relying on changing the program assigned to a track

I dont see how including the disk streaming means u cant have multiple projects assigned to a track, as they seem tatally unrelated features.

I did not realise the arranger view did not allow u to cut and drag and drop audio & midi parts; that is shit if u cant move things around.

I think part of the reason for the arranger was to better handle audio track recording; but if u cant move the audio around within the arranger view or chop and drag and drop parts of the recorded audio within the arranger then that is half baked.

(being completely honest the slice motion thang IS forward thinking tho...)
