After all, the major difference hardware wise is the 64 keys but they do have the APCs and I guess you can hook it up like an external keyboard does. Everything else is software based, especially the clips and matrix.

I'd be down for a 'Force Studio' that can connect to MPC standalone and get 'MPC Studio' playing nice with Force Standalone.

What is going on with the forum lately, what with this and the response to the 'midi is dead, long live audio' post yesterday there seems to be something malfunctioning with the sarcasm radar. Maybe a <sarcasm> bbcode is needed?

My reference to MPC4 was commentary on the seemingly common thinking that the next shiny new release is somehow finally going to unlock hidden musical potential in oneself, like MPC2 is so bad that it's just holding everyone back.

We saw the exact thing with 'standalone stems', even though the tech has been fully accessible for free for years, some were seemingly unable to use their MPC anymore because it didn't have stems inside it. And now they cant use it anyway because standalone stems mostly sounds like shit.

It is happening all around the interwebs, people takes things too literally don't get sarcasm and irony, and the worst of all is that a lot of times while one (the sarcasm sender) and the other (the sarcasm receiver) are on the same boat and understand each, other there's a 3rd party that angers and tries to protect (unrequested) the receiver.
So yes, we need (not only here) a sarcasm emoji of some sorts.
Anyway. I want to try the MPC 3 beta sooner than later to start asking for MPC4 right away. So please akai release it to us the pariah already.

I know the MPC 4.0 reference was sarcasm; most people wanted 3.0 for specific features such as the mixer, the arranger, disk streaming and some wanted a different UI.

Most people did not just want 3.0 for the sake of it, or cos its new, or cos it would make us a better beat maker, people just wanted specific features that we knew would only be available in 3.0.

Hence why the 3.0 was so anticipated.

Yeah, that's one of the things with many devices anymore, they may have been thought out as being one thing, but then other features are added, and they become many-in-one. Often then, the workflow becomes sort of "special", too unique, and so the usability becomes awkward, or complicated, convoluted.

I personally have loads of such machines, and I mainly use them for their initial intended purpose. However, I don't want to box myself in, since even these devices sometimes have additional cool features that I might like to use.

Some of the traditional workflow of the MPC, to me, is strange. E.g., the MPC programs never really made sense to me, so I like the new changed MPC3 version better in this regard. But then again, I came from Pro12/24/Cubase and coding trackers (yeah, long time ago), essentially DAW style solutions.

Oh! Speaking of, I do have a Q700 laying around. I actually "found it" (i.e. dug it out) recently for some odd reason I cannot remember. I had no floppies laying around, so I bought a USB floppy drive (it basically emulates like a thousand 3.5" disks using a USB stick) and replaced that old built-in drive with that. Awesome! And sadly... I will probably never use it. It was "laying around" (i.e. stashed in a closet) for a reason.

I must say that I like the new DAW visuals (from the videos) and structure of MPC3. This is what I thought the MPC X was when I originally bought it years back. That was the vibe I got from how Akai was showcasing it.

The audio tracks aren't really all that appealing, to me, because I already use a 24-channel multitrack mixer, but drum/FX sampling is.

Then just get a laptop and a daw…

No need, version MPC3 is coming! :)

I agree, it's truly amazing that it's lasted this long. It's middle aged, going by human lifespans. ;)

However, it's not dead quite yet, and I would be surprised if it doesn't make it to 50. :)

No, it's a private beta and still being worked on. You don't need MPC3 to help you develop as a musician, MPC4 is the one to wait for

To add to this, I suggest you read The Mental Game of Electronic Music Production. Long and short of it is: just building the habit of making (and finishing) music regularly, with what you have, is more important for your development as a musician than any new gear or software. You don't need a book to tell you this (as that too is a distraction from creating), but don't ever wait to make music. :) Plus the MPC is going to be 95% the same anyway.

I am patiently waiting for MPC Vista.
That will make me a better musician, artist, father and triathlete.

Still takes about a millisecond to transmit one single midi message, and it still only transmits ONE message at a time regardless of how many channels or events are coming in. MIDI channel 2 needs to get in line and wait for MIDI channel 1 to send its note data, and MIDI channel 3 has to wait for those two, while you go figure out where to put the clock ticks in, and anything else you're sending over. God forbid you got something doing Sysex while you're trying to play a 16 channel sequence.

Off-topic, but this is not true. USB MIDI can transmit many MIDI messages inside a single USB frame, and all of the messages arrive simultaneously, from the receiving application's point of view. With a frame rate of 1000 Hz it doesn't take "about" a millisecond, it takes exactly one millisecond to transfer such a frame. Transfer speed issues are largely gone, unless the MIDI application specifically wants to limit the rate, or the data is going to a DIN MIDI port.

Usb midi has solved many issues I had with synths that had their own sequencers. My td3 drifts like crazy through din up to the point that I have to sample the pattern while starting the sequence through usb midi sounds spot on
